The Nikon Z6 is a full frame mirrorless camera that came out of nowhere. Its completely shocked me with how great it is and to be frank I wasn't planning on buying it.

But I did buy it and have decided to sell my Sony A7iii to keep the Z6 for a few reasons! Lets talk about those today!

Its really great.

Stay tuned for next year's video update titled : why I switched from the z6 to the a7s3 followed by why I switched from the a7s3 to Panasonic.

In your custom setting, C3 is the power off delay, change your your stand-by timer to no-limit and that will let your display stay on indefinitely

I still laugh at how people gave the EOS R a better time than the Z6. Nikon are more than back in the game. Just want an APS-C Z mount camera and I am ready to switch as well💯👏🏿

What about auto focus tracking in video - is Z6 okay or can tracking be improved later with a software update?

The ProRes RAW output from HDMI certainly will be a desirable feature that the other brands can't offer until they completely design their cameras with faster internal bus and cards. Only the Z Nikon cameras were designed for the higher bit rates from the start.
The reasons I got a Z6 as my first mirrorless after years of D850, 800, 7000, 90 and 25 years of Canon film before that was the build quality and the Z mount lenses and what that offers in the future. Everything on the Sony was cheapened to make a low price point so they left out pro grade cards, weather resistance and quality connectors, jacks, sockets etc. It is as if they build them to last only as long as the new model cycle starts. My friends who shoot Sony have had 3 different a7, the longest any kept their camera was 9 months. Nikon users, and Canon for that matter, invest in a body and tend to keep them and they last. I just got back from a trip to Turkey and because of the weight, size limits for carry-on, my only camera that could meet the restrictions was the D7000 and a fast small prime and was very happy with the results, since after years, works and looks great despite 230, 000 shutter count. My D800 has 338, 000 shutter count(no burst shooting all single composed frames) and used under harsh conditions. I got back from Turkey and decided to get a mirrorless for travel and as a walking around camera and tried to keep an open mind, checked out Fuji XT3, Sony a73, and a few others but the only one that fit that long term keeper criteria was the Z cameras. I got the Z7 although it was more than I wanted to spend. It was great but the 46mpx files, although stunning were just too big for a casual camera and I already had the hi res covered by the D850 and D800 for the studio and event work. After a week arranged to swap the Z7 for a Z6 plus the difference in cost made up with Z mount native lenses. Great choice, love it, since getting it, it has been with me everywhere and it is well beyond my expectations. The Z mount S lenses beat my large expensive F mount glass for wide open sharpness corner to corner, with superior contrast, lack of distortion. The 35 is likely the best 35mm on the planet. The 24-70 small zoom, is sharper and faster focusing than my 24-70 2.8 G and E versions that cost 3 times as much each.
The XQD card was an added bonus, super reliable, fast, durable, the only pro grade card currently available. No SD card equipped camera can be considered pro grade. The Z cameras are the only ones designed for the super fast CFExprress cards that 3 companies are releasing this spring. Comparing CFExpress to SD is the same as comparing the SSD drives to 5.25 inch floppy drives in speed, reliability and durability. That is a big failure on Sony's part, using cheap parts to get the price down. Leaving out weather sealing is a more serious threat to the investment in Sony. It is not just rain but high humidity and corrosive atmosphere or dust that it is not protected against. None of the environment caused damage is covered under warranty. There are too many well-made brands out their to cheap out and buy Sony. Panasonic, Fuji, Olympus, Canon and of course Nikon are all better built to last far into the future and handle common hostile environments like outdoors shooting in changeable weather or near the ocean or high humidity.

I'm totally with you! I have a z6 on the way, and what Nikon has done with firmware 3.0 is amazing. I have lots of Nikon glass and I'm looking forward to using it on the z6 with the FTZ. The autofocus has gotten fantastic, I had a chance to try it out with wildlife and it was spot on - birds, squirrels - I was 18 for 20 shots in focus, I'm I only had the camera for a couple of hours. One tip: If you are out tracking fast subjects then turn off the exposure preview - it makes autofocus really fast, right on par with the A7.

But A7iii has one major advantage: the availability of a fast, all-purpose, silent, excellent AF, relatively compact, and most importantly, affordable FF zoom lens: the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8

Made the jump to mirrorless with the Z6II bc I already have a lot of Nikon glass. A good low-light camera for wildlife photography. What I don't have is an endless budget to delve into a new line of glass with a Sony or a Cannon or a fuji. Plus, the Z6 II is getting a lot of good reviews less the lack of native glass which is OK for me as the F2Z adapter is a lot cheaper than new lenses. Nikon will get caught up in native glass within a 1-3 year time frame. I purchased the Z6II as a companion to my D500 DSLR DX camera. I plan to shoot wildlife with the 200-500 5.6 Nikon zoom which is currently on order. Nice video

Note: If you buy the Z6 Kit with the Moza Air 2 you need to connect:

NIKON Z6-->Micro USB to Type-C Adapter-->M3C-Micro Cable-->CAM CTRL port on Air 2. The CAM CTRL port is on the side of quick release plate, next to 7.4V OUT.

Do you say that the z6 autofocus can improve with upcoming firmware updates?

just a couple of points. USB C can charge at a variety of voltages. It might well be that the nikon charger requires a higher voltage to charge the camera if you are using a powerbank try something that can charge a laptop like PowerCore+ 20100 USB-C from anker. The XQD cards are awesome. though wait till the Cfast cards are supported. You wont ever fill the buffer again on the camera. They write out at up to 1000mbs. The other advantage of XQD / Cfast is that they are genuine. No Chinese rebranded knockoffs. The form factor is more robust too.

Also just announced by atomos is the ninja V will support prores raw on the nikon zed 6 with 12bit raw and possibly a higher resolution up to 6k which is the sensor native resolution. Firmware update required.

Dude I couldn’t agree more! I freaking love the camera!!! I’ve been having problems with autofocus though. Haven’t been rock solid. I need to figure out the best settings for it.

I disagree about XQD. I love the format! They are MUUUCCCH more reliable cards than SD and I love the clicky feeling I get when I put the card in. Also they are the fastest cards ever so if Nikon ever does 10bit internal (which they told me at photokina they will hopefully do next year with a firmware update) then the XQD can support it.

You forgot to mention the ibis!! It’s so much better than the a7iii is!

I love your reviews, and this one in particular since I´m actually trying to decide between the Sony A7III and the Nikon Z6 (among others) it´s amazing, I love how clear and straight to the point your expositions are. I only wish that you also covered the photography side of the cameras that you review, that coupled with the way you approach your videos will make them the perfect comprehensive reviews. Keep up the good work and stay safe!

I'm Sony shooter and at first I thought it's some kind of a paid clip, but you made really valid points - Z6 is a great camera. Use what best suits you :)

I don't have a Sony or a Nikon, but I can definitely say that the most important thing here is the Z Mount. Along with Canon's RF mount, both will catch up to Sony pretty soon whilst being able to produce pro level bodies. To simplify, in the near future, Canon and/or Nikon will own the Mirrorless FF market (If everything goes well). Those 2 mounts are the most important thing. The rest is just added colour.
