Yeah overriding is one way to smoothen up these odd/8 feelings. Gavin Harrison is a fan too.

Back in the late 90s I joined the band for a local singer songwriter in NJ. One song had a section in 7, so I played this beat. I knew the band was going to work well when she said “the Vinnie beat…nice!”

Vinnie's playing on that whole album is awesome - Seven Days in particular for me is a great example of how odd time can be made to sound not so odd 👍🥁

That's one of my all time favorite albums - entire thing is a masterpiece

This feels like how Carnatic rhythms nest within a main time feel. Very cool video man!

I love 7/8 and 9/8 grooves when the bell alternates between the upbeat and downbeat.

Great catch. I was floored by its consistent smoothness when I first heard this.

I always counted this in 14 as I was very young and didn't know any better naive. My drum teacher did my head in for a while by intellectualising it and making me count in 7/8 which made it feel (in my head) more like a late nineties sample loop.

Gonna practice this, sounds really cool

This is fantastic! I totally believe that those jarring jerky resets can really throw off the vibe of a song, and we deserve music that flows and lifts us up!

I absolutely love odd time signature grooves that are played so that the listener can still sway to or clap their hands. This is a great example!

Another I absolutely love is Pineapple Thief’s “Alone at Sea”… also seamless with a repeating offset pattern, surprisingly hard to play for something that sounds simple.

A band I play in has payed St Augustine but we never quite got it right (not yet 😅)

Insane groove. I think another reason it kills is bc the snare drum lands in the same place you would expect in a straight 4/4 groove: the 3rd and 7th eighth notes in the measure. Absolute goat
