Let's not forget that Prost missed out on a fifth championship by just half a point in 1984. He was class.

Just some facts to keep in mind before saying anything:

During Fangio's time, the World Championship consisted of 6 to 9 races, compared to the 16 during Prost and Schumacher's time and the 20 we have nowadays, it was relatively easier to achieve a high win percentage.

Fangio and Hamilton were always in competitive cars during the whole of their careers, so winning races was relatively easier. Prost had to drive for an uncompetitive McLaren in 1980 and then Renault, before going back to McLaren. Schumacher drove for Jordan and pretty much built both the Benetton and Ferrari teams from scratch. Vettel drove for BMW and Toro Rosso before going to Red Bull.

Fangio had to fight Farina, Ascari and Moss among others. Prost had to fight Mansell, Piquet, Lauda, Schumacher and Senna among others. Schumacher had to fight Prost, Hakkinen, Hill, Villeneuve, Montoya, Raikkonen, Alonso among others. Hamilton had to fight Alonso, Raikkonen, Vettel, Rosberg among others. You decide who had the harder time winning those titles.

When I said I wanted F1 to sound like it did in the 1980's this isn't quite what I had in mind.

Fun fact : Since 2008 onwards, every even numbered year has had the last race as a title decider and every odd numbered year hasn't

Fangio is the greatest. But to be sincere, when Vettel won his 4th, he had the best possible opportunity to become the greatest (statistically speaking)....

But he went to the wrong team

ok all jokes aside I'm speaking as myself now and not as Maurizio. Hamilton and Mercedes really deserved it because of consistency something Ferrari didn't have so well done

When Michael won his 5th title in 2002 it was and still is the earliest  a WDC has ever been clinched after 11 races ( at Magny Cours in July  2002 ) with 6 races to go . Even if Lewis (or Seb) win a 5th title next year that record isn't going and neither is Schumacher's record percentage of season podiums he set that same year because the percentage is 100%

Im an avid F1 enthusiast, and adore the rich history of F1 and its drivers. Although modern drivers have more advance technology and information, I believe the sheer amount of races combined with the physical and mental grind of an F1 race makes Hamiltons Achievements surpass some ledgendary drivers, i was not aware that Prosts 4 championship seasons for example, were only 8 races long? Not even half the current season length.

Im surprised about the stats of Vettel, it shows a brilliant a driver

Another interesting stat is that of those five drivers only Vettel is yet to win a driver's title in a season where his team didn't also win the constructor's championship. In 1986 Prost won the driver's title in a Mclaren and Williams won the constructor's title, in 1994 Schumacher won in a Benetton and again Williams won constructor's, and in 2008 Hamilton won in a Mclaren and Ferrari won the constructor's. I discounted Fangio because the constructor's championship only began in 1958 and his last year in F1.

It's no dig at Vettel because plenty of greats including Senna, Alonso, Lauda haven't managed to do it, but I still think it's interesting that he is the only one to manage four titles without doing it... yet...
