WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A BROWN BELT

"TODAY IS THE YOUNGEST YOU'LL EVER BE"

Hello,
Thank you for watching this video.
My name is Kazuki Umemura.

I am a BJJ black belt training in Tokyo in Japan.

To introduce myself, I left my full time job to start helping BJJ practitioners, especially for 40+, to safely become more proficient at BJJ and "FEEL ALIVE."

This Youtube channel is for any BJJ practitioners at any age although I will upload a lot of videos for older practitioners as well as the ones for practitioners at any age.

Also, I created a FB group where any BJJ practitioners 40 years old and over can come together and improve together. Because the group is new, we don't have many people in the group, so if you can join it and let us know how to make the group better/more engaging, that will be appreciated.

Thank you!

[Host] Kazuki Umemura

I received my black belt from Marcelo Alonso, 6th degree black belt under Master Carlson Gracie.
I was born in Japan, and when I was 18 years old, I studied abroad in the U.S. to train BJJ and get a bachelor's degree in business from the University of Washington.
Over the course of my BJJ journey, I have gained substantial experience competing and teaching BJJ in both Japan and the U.S.
I am strongly passionate about improving the quality of others' lives, especially 40+ year olds, through teaching BJJ. My motto is "Today is the youngest you'll ever be."

Thanks for the video! I just got my brown belt a few weeks ago and I’m of course going through the usually “imposter syndrome” stage! The best advice I heard for getting over this is that your coach knows a hell of a lot more about jiu jitsu than you do, so trust his judgment.

My professor gave me the brown belt a year ago and I couldn't handle the pressures that comes with it... you turn into one big bulls eye and EVERYONE wants to kick your ass. My last roll with a strong blue belt was humbling to say the least... I want to come back and prove my mental. At 57 it's gonna be a tough rode back.

I keep hearing "neck attacks" when you say "leg attacks", haha. But then you talk about kneebars and toe holds. Thank you for a great video.

Hey guys, nice video I appreciate your perspective. I'm a BJJ brown belt myself. Been training casually for about 15 years with some notable gaps for kids being born and just turned 40 this year. I think the one point of contention I have here is that you should start learning and training leg/foot attacks long before you get to brown belt. Sure, you can't execute on many for competitions but it's important to not be surprised by a whole new set of "things" when you end up reaching the higher belts.

I agree. My professor told me that when you get your brown belt, you are actually close to black. Just need some refinement.

Waiting till brown belt for legs nowadays is obsolete. Been doing those for years now.

Purple belt I was knocking people off balance. Knowing when not to force something by using balance. Brown belt I was knocking out black belts and felt like it was the belt of magic for me. Never got
my black belt due to family situation, but I felt the black belt would have been the belt of perfection for me. I loved my journey in Bjj. Reached finals at 2 tournaments but came
up short with silver.

You should learn leglocks at blue belt not brown

Nice 👍🏼 - only a 2 stripe purple belt, but they let us do leg attacks in class - I use ankle locks and toe holds most, still afraid to put on the heel hooks so I catch and release usually and occasionally hit a knee bar - purple brown and black belts use them against me as well - I guess we’re not following tournament rules…
