Rotoscoping is a word with a long tradition in cinema. If you ever watch modern television and films, you will also be experiencing the results of extensive rotoscoping.

The vast majority of rotoscoping is used to create masks. These masks can be used for a number of different things; secondary color correction, limiting effects to certain areas, or in compositing for keeping parts of the image over the areas that we have replaced to create a realistic result. The usefulness of accurate masks cannot be overstated. Every time you see a more than basic effect, there will be some form of masking in there.

Rotoscoping is a core VFX skill. Whatever your role is in post-production, you will encounter it to some degree or other. You may not want or need to be pulling off fully articulated roto objects. But there is always going to be something you want to keep in or out the shot. This is a job for rotoscoping.

Roto can be a very time-intensive process. The key to saving time, is to identify what you are trying to achieve with your mask.

In the next few exercises we will be focusing on how you can get the best results with the least amount of effort, using Mocha to do as much of the work as possible.

Mocha Pro has a lot of cool features but I mainly got it for Rotoscoping, so I appreciate the guide (: I'm very, very new to using anything other than AE's rotobrush so I need every tip and trick that I can get my hands on ahaha.

These videos are not put in my subs box by youtube (with my other account subscribed to this channel).

I don't know what's going on. *Is it because multiple videos are posted at the same exact same time?* So youtube juste don't bother put them in my feed?

I saw the last rotoscoping one from the homepage, ... And discovered (again) that I missed a bunch of them.

I really think that posting more than 1 or 2 videos at the same time messes make youtube not push them in our subscription box.

Hey man, question.I I don't know, maybe I missed something. I just felt that doing roto this way was soo much manual work. I understand that you are using Mocha's planar tracking ability to track planes in your subject (and these would be skew since the area is organic - meaning natural, stemming from natural things - and perspective here would be too extremely accurate as that's not what we want - we are looking for an area to track to drive masks we can use to roto' out the subject), and then creating splines for things that would have similar base movement and linking them (such as the hands., palms etc) - and then animating them (using least number of keyframes) - since these are complex shapes - and then using the result as track mattes for roto'ing out the subject I understand that.

Basically, in a nutshell, you are yusing Mocha's planar tracking ability to drive masks to roto out the subject (hence, we're not dealing with surfaces/grids here)

But, I just felt that the amount of work to track the girl was very manual and extreme. For instance, I couldn't think why I wouldn't just do this in AE. Using AE Rotoscoping, I would just mask out the subject, and then click the forward/backward button to let AE do its thing. I would also pause and change the area accordingly if things were out of line. It just seems more natural and easier. Plus she looks pretty different from the background, so I don't see why not use AE for roto'ing.

I mean, I don't get it. What is the benefit/advantage of using Mocha for Roto'ing? I don't see how this would be better than using AE's Rotoscoping technique. Can u please help? I ask because I really wanna learn Mocha to the fullest extent. You could say that its just a preference, but I don't think that's the right answer. From the standpoint of technicality, knowledge and significance what makes using Mocha AE for roto'ing a subject better? Please explain. You could also argue that PowerMesh is something I could use. True. But again, that's not the answer to this question (right?). As someone who uses Mocha for roto'ing vs AE, why Mocha? What am I gaining here? Also, can u point me to an example wherein using Mocha for roto'ing would be better?

Otherwise, thank you for helping me with all this. I truly appreciate your patience with me and your assistance.
