The Catholic Church is nothing more than a works based religion, there are things you must do for your sins to be forgiven, the sacraments of the church. The confessional is extremely problematic. You enter confess sins you have committed then the priest tells you to complete a specified penance and your sins will be forgiven.
For one thing, a priest can never forgive your sins.

Luke 5:19-21 KJV
And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and let him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before Jesus. [20] And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee. [21] And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Also there is nothing we can do to obtain forgiveness of our sins Jesus has done all that is necessary with his finished work of the cross and resurrection from the dead.
