Vinny was 100% right and the appeals court would very likely overturn the conviction because of it. I think the judge did it out of spite for Vinny.

This scene is what makes the most accurate lawyer movie. In real life, the judge shouldn't have overruled such a lucid, intelligent, well thought out objections, but he does anyway - just like in real life.

When I first saw this movie I wasn’t sure who was playing the judge but I later found out it was the same person who played the role of Herman Monster in the classic Tv series The Munsters.

Fred Gwin (sp?) was so good in his role as the judge in this movie, I thought he should have at least been dominated for best supporting actor!!! 😅

Realistically, a judge would have said this:

Judge: Mr. Gambini.
Vinny: Yes sir?
Judge: That is a lucid, intelligent, and well thought out objection.
Vinny: Thank you Your Honor.
Judge: Court will take a 30 minute recess. Mr. Gambini, you can stay here in the courtroom. Mr. Trotter, I would like for you to report to my chamber. 30 minute recess.

Vinny isn't looking at the judge. He is looking to the judge's left. Probably to read his lines on a prompter.

I'm always found this scene implausible. And it was out of character - till now the judge had been scrupulous in his application of the law, but here he just capriciously decides to deny Vinny's correct argument? Then from this point on, despite having ample opportunity to disrupt Vinny, the judge becomes as helpful as can be when Vinny proposes calling Mona Lisa. The judge even tells her to sit down when she tries to leave. As much as I love the movie, this scene sits oddly in a script that was otherwise fairly tight and plausible.

In reality, if Vinny had lost the case because of that objection, he could have had it overturned on appeal.

Rest of the courtroom stuff I totally get but I still don't understand why the judge overruled him. What was wrong with Vinny's argument?
