How dangerous is the air around us? | COVID-19 Special

Scientists are still assessing how dangerous these doses of airborne virus can be - and what we can do to avoid them. Opening a window is one way to keep the air fresh. That's a bit more complicated in the winter, doesn't work in all rooms, and certainly doesn't work on airplanes. The aviation industry says cabin-air is sufficiently filtered and circulated. Some experts say questions remain. But by keeping the air moving with systems like air conditioning, are we decreasing the risk, or merely spreading it?

I ask the question, If someone near by was smoking a cigarette would I be able to smell it? If yes, then I'm in a potential situation if they are infected. Longer lengths of time increase the chances. Also smaller rooms concentrate the virus. I work in a car as a driving instructor. If my student is sick and I'm with them for 2 hours in a space thats only 1.5 cubic meters ... You get the picture? I wear a full face elastomeric reperator with N95 filters while I work.

Airlines claiming air is cleanest on an airplane now, is that so true? Airplane trip has always been quickest way to get sick in my opinion.

The conclusion is we have to keep airplane windows open.

Japanese don't shake hands, Chinese don't hug strangers, there is no weekly cult mass meetings, food is eaten with chopsticks and dishes has spoons, we bath daily, some twice a day, we change intimate garments daily, some people use disposable briefs, tissue paper is widely used, in Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong wet wipes is given free. We ride public transport quietly, if ill we wear mask and in future stay in covalescing hotels. In future scanned people with infectious disease stays in quarantine hotel.

And education system, we are adapting.

Good show DW

There needs to be more discussion about how UV light disables bacteria and viruses in air spaces. Far Red UV light in the 222 nm range is safe for eyes and skin. It could be put over doorways, over countertops, in bathrooms, and to disinfect bags, backpacks and purses.

UV light can be added to ductwork.

This is already done in some hospitals for many years already.

There are ways to use UV light in airplanes and other forms of public transportation.

I think all public spaces should have UV light treatments available. Particularly waiting rooms, lobbies, and public bathrooms.

anyone else thinks the airline industry is not taking it's responsibility? It's a pandemic, airtravel should be the number one thing canceled but it was the first thing saved and opened up again, while ships can't board harbours people take holidays... This seems so ridiculous to me.

The mechanical engineering description is correct but another element to the risk infection is the viral dosage inhaled which would depend on the concentration of viral particles in the exhalation plumes.

Thanks for this great and unbiased scientific information on the science of airflow and viral spread. It's a complicated situation and we all must do our best to reduce risk of transmission.

Can someone just make bubbles for our heads and we all move on please?

Renewing the ambient air between 6 to 12 renewals per hour, reduces the risks of transmission.

I’m more concerned about how I can improve my health to reduce the impact of the virus because you are not going to out run the virus.

Where I live in Ottawa, Canada, they do not have church choirs because doctors feel that singing can release air particles which could infect other people with COVID-19.

It’s the sweaty middle aged joggers puffing and panting their way past me in the street that I fear most, I hold my breath until they are about 30 feet away.

Possible solution for air travel.
1. PPE suit.
2. Breathing Mask.

In Airport, you check in, suit up, go to your seat.

Long distance air travel >> scanned passengers or cubicle seats.
