There's so much to be learned by taking stuff apart and it often leads to something creative! My dad used to take apart and mess with radios and all sorts of audio equipment - he makes music now. My brother used to take apart and mess with computers - he makes programs now. I used to take apart and mess with anything that could be turned into craft supplies - I make art now.

A VHS Player was one of the first real world things I took apart to understand how it worked; was 11-12 years old and it was an amazing experience.

I like Adam's suggestion of drawing a diagram of what you're working on to keep track of where the screws go. Now what I need to do is come up with a thin (but strong enough) magnetic sheet with a whiteboard surface on top of it. That way the screws don't roll around either.

I once tried to take apart a hive, to see how the honey was being produced. Long story short, it didn't end well. Also, just FYI, pincer is not a good tool to pull the stings off your sensitive body parts. Hurts like hell.

I was a good little boy and didn't destroy anything. And now here I am with no skills.

Here's an advice: If you feel the need to take awesome stuff apart, DON'T(!) take apart PFAFF sewing machines from 1979-1999 if you plan to use them again afterwards.
Just loosening a cover plate on a 1200 series or a 1400 series machine can irrevicably throw off the timing of the mechanisms or rip electrical leads controlling key functions.

Heh, I was literally thinking that the VHS was the best thing to take apart and then he goes ahead and mentions his favourite is the VHS . The cherry on top was we both liked it for the exact same reason: The heavy round chrome thingy, or the video head cylinder.

True words Adam. Take something apart to put it back together.

I remember stuffing a VHS tape into my dad's brand new VHS player. As a toddler I pulled it out of the box and found a tape and by accident stuffed the tape in backwards and when the machine did not have power. Fond memories!

You can take photos of the item you’re taking apart and draw on them (using an app) to indicate what goes where.

So true love taking things apart and salvaging bit from stuff and making something new out of all of it even if it don't work as intended 😂
