The best thing I can say for new players is to go for what you want. Something about Elden ring is the number of choices you have in terms of building your character. If you wanna center yourself around casting magic alone, there is a way for it. If you just want to swing a big hammer at people with reckless abandon, go for it, and if you want to be a blood-bending edgey katana boi and win the game easily....well, you'll be like everyone else...but you can do it!

Chose prisoner, restarted for an hour to beat the first boss, immediately used the stone key I picked to start, spent another 30 minutes getting to the ulcerated tree spirit, spent another 2 hours beating it, fought the first guy who talked to me once I got out, spent 90 minutes fighting the tree sentinel, fought like 20 people and 4 wolves simultaneously for that stupid map fragment, met Melina and turned her down at first because she seemed suspicious, totally missed the first crafting area. Boy did I make my first playthrough unnecessarily hard...

absolutely great video for new players. I personally go straight for the Morningstar, a golden pickles foot and kill the big dragon on caelid to fast forward some leveling. Start as melee imo, pure str or dex with vigor to learn mob and boss mechanics before burying a caster and watching all your spells be dodged lol

Also re grinding to level up I just went in and out of the rest area without fast traveling and the NPCs respawned instantly. Save a lot of time lol.

Im so glad I found this video, I didn’t pay attention to the vendor in the church and got confused and thought I was supposed to do the caves with the wolves and that boss. Needless to say this video made the game easier

I would disagree with heading to the castle right away when there is so much content to the south that is more early game focused. If you’re like me and don’t like to skip areas this is hands down my best advice. You will run into things that are very difficult and you may want to come back but you’ll be much more prepared for everything that’s to come.

Take your time with this game, it’s amazing And worth the investment.

Don’t ruin the game for yourself by digging too far into videos or the wiki. I personally just used the map to not miss out on locations and to me that was a lot more rewarding that rushing around trying to make a specific build.
