Multiband Compression vs Dynamic EQ

There seems to be some confusion about the multiband compression and dynamic eq. They're very similar, but there are differences that matter.

probably worth mentioning - but the ever popular behginer x32 has the "Combinator" effect which is a multi band compressor. Works great on the mixbus to control shoutiness/harshness when dealing with fletcher-munson sort of non-linearity in a live setting.

I was looking for a multi-band compressor video today! You published just in time!
Thanks anyway for your most valuable videos for all kind of input signals (voice, bass guitar etc.). Considering the information makes a noticable difference!

I’ve been using Platinum Ears’ 5orcery VST plug-in in a live environment via Dante or USB for years. It’s a free 5 band multi-band limiter that processes audio like a dynamic EQ so there are no phase problems at the xover frequencies.

Also, x/m-32 users can insert the combinator 5 band comp via the effects rack

I’ll have to try the F6 for that “finger VS strum” trick. Sometimes I’ll route the acoustic guitar to two channels and process one for finger style and the other for pick/strum. The nice thing about that is you can actually blend the two as well if you want, if the player goes somewhere in between.

I’ve found such great uses for the F6, my latest being the pastor’s headset mic. It has consolidated about three other plug-ins I was using into one - De-essing, EQ, multi band, and dynamic EQ, and I seem to get better control to boot!

Finally!! This is great, but please also do one with vocals! Perhaps doing one example for live stream and for FOH.

I have been in love with audio since I was a child. I hope I can get the chance of mixing at my church someday. The volunteer there knows almost nothing of what he's doing. Worst of all is he thinks he knows everything. 🤣

First, you mentioned "Vocals" but never covered it, as you went straight to the Drum Buss instead. I started using the new Eventide Split EQ. Also the Waves MV2, which is a combo Low and High Level Compressor, 1 fader for each, and 1 fader for output. Simple plugin that can bring down the highs and bring up the Lows, and especially on VOCALS, that usually has a wide dynamic range.
