How To Grow a Moustache: Ragnar Ólafsson & Hörður Ólafsson at TEDxReykjavík

Musician Ragnar Ólafsson and Hörður Ólafsson, musician and visual artist, attempt to interpret the creative process of artists with reference to the long and productive career of Frank Zappa. They decided to meet once a week and discuss one of his albums. Then Hörður would draw a symbolic image and Ragnar would write a piece of text to interpret the album. They would then publish their work on a blog, kind of like a digital sketch book, open to everyone.

"On the one hand, the title is a reference to Frank Zappa's signature - the good, thick moustache. We've calculated that if you spend 8 hours a day, 5 days a week listening to Zappa's albums, it will take you three weeks to get over all his material. That's about the same time as it takes the average man to collect a proper moustache."

Ragnar and Hörður have worked as artists for quite a while. Ragnar has been a member of the bands, Árstíðir, Ask the Slave and In Siren. Hörður has been a band member of Momentum, as well as working as a visual artist under the alias Holaf.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event.
