Are You An “Alcoholic”?

The first thing we need to understand, before looking at the signs of a drinking problem, is whether or not you’re an alcoholic.

Deciding if you’re an alcoholic can sometimes appear to be a precursor to getting sober.

I’m here to tell you that you do NOT need to call yourself an alcoholic to get sober.

Some problem drinkers will think to themselves that because their drinking problem isn’t as bad as an “alcoholics”, they don’t try to fix it.

“Well, it’s not like I’m an alcoholic that has to drink in the morning when I wake up every day.”

They think to themselves.

I’ve spoken about the “alcoholic” a number of times, and it makes up a crucial part of the Soberclear program. However, it’s important to touch on this now.

Understanding the concept of the “alcoholic” will help you understand your drinking problem much more clearly.

My Story With Being An “Alcoholic”

When I realised my drinking was a problem, there was a point where I tried going to A.A.

That’s what everyone else says to do, right? If you’ve got a problem, you go to a meeting.

Whilst A.A. works for some people, including my Mum who has been for 20 years, it wasn’t for me.

I’m not going to go into the reasons in this post, but I will touch on the label of the “alcoholic”.

When you introduce yourself during a meeting, you are supposed to introduce yourself as an alcoholic.

“Hi, I’m Cassandra and I’m an alcoholic.”

They say.

In other words, if you’ve stopped drinking for 15 years using A.A., you still are supposed to introduce yourself as an alcoholic.

In other words, you are still a problem. You are still powerless over alcohol.
It makes no difference how long you have been sober. You are always an alcoholic.
Excessive alcohol consumption was merely an extension of your personality flaw – the “alcoholic” in you.

To me, that’s a huge problem.

Let me explain why…

Let’s say we’ve got Ted. Ted is 28 and he thinks he might have a drinking problem.
He goes to his first meeting.

Here, he is told to decide if he is an alcoholic or not. All of the people in the meeting are telling similar stories to what Ted has experienced.

“Surely, if all these people can’t handle their drink and I’m like them – I must be one of them”

He thinks to himself.

If Ted decides he is an alcoholic, he now has a label.

Being an “alcoholic” carries a LOT of weight.

Let’s say Ted stops attending meetings after 3 months. He no longer enjoys it and he decided it wasn’t for him for whatever reason.

Well, what happens to the label?

Does that mean Ted is still an alcoholic?

What happens if he relapses and gets black-out drunk?

“Well, I’m an alcoholic apparently. I can’t control it. I’m powerless.”

I scored 11/11. That said, I'm sober 11 days now. Your videos have genuinely made me look at alcohol differently (bleach). And finally, realising that the drug/ethanol is the problem - not me. I sincerely thank you Leon

Hmmn - I was the same as you but about 30 years ago - couple pints (with friends) after a hard days work in London, no problems.
- 20 years ago it was a few beers and a large wine when I got home.
- 10 years ago beer didn't do it anymore - only wine and a large G&T (and besides I was being very successful)
- 2 years ago it was just gin - no tonic (after I'd put the kids and the wife to bed - who always seemed to be in a mood for some reason).
1 year ago I looked divorce and death in the face (after going AWOL for a week I still can't remember). I realised everything I'd done with booze was an illusion - and I could have done a lot of things a lot better.

I very much resinate with your story Leon and answered yes to all the questions. I am booze free for 2020, day 205 and have no plans to go back. I'm documenting my journey on youtube, giving up is a game changer!

AA sounds like it's dis-empowering to people, it is quite dangerous. Your thoughts are the same as mine. Yes you can have a drinking problem but to say you have no control is reckless at best.

I drink because I'm homeless and bored and I found my friend few months ago at his home he hung himself . I gave up drink for 32 days but I drink to forget stuff and for time to go faster

I was an 11/11 on this test. 9 months sober now - Quitting was very very difficult but THE best thing I've ever done. I thought I'd want to kill myself without it, instead life is absolutely 💯 / 💯 . I am also not religious and never went to AA or anything, if you want to stop, do it your way, but be honest

I can’t help but laugh at this.. will power is huge in any addiction do to chemical dependency weather it’s drugs or alcohol.. just get the chemical out of your system but slowly lower the amount you consume to wean off I was a 2-3 bottles of rum kind of guy I didn’t none of this bs to stop my heavy consumption I went from 2-3 750ml of whiskey or rum to maybe 2-3 shots threw out the week with just will power because I acknowledged my issue with alcohol… if you have no will power to change you never will and that’s the true foundation of quiting a dependency.. your guide litterally only works with those with a strong will power to change

Uh oh. Didn’t do good on this test. This test doesn’t seem fair. U can experience these things from just heavily drinking 3 times a year. Like that’s not a alcoholic
