"I'm really excited for the future of this console"

Not something I was expecting anyone to say about the GameCube in 2022...

Well done sir, well done!

I just picked up a Japanese gamecube with gameboy player yesterday. This news is nice.

This was my first legit soldering project that had any level of stakes to it, and the stuff was extremely small compared to the battery replacement I did on a bop-it before lol. I was able to successfully do the mod using the 24awg wire salvaged from some cat5 cable and it worked good! Soldering to the pico was a breeze! It’s definitely doable from a beginner standpoint :D

This is honestly a lifesaver. I ripped off the pads when trying to install the old modchip. and the disc drive already didn't work. It was basically dead until now, so this is amazing!

Thanks for tipping the scales. This is exactly what I'm trying to do for a used gamecube and hearing you tell me it's a good beginner mod is a relief. Now instead of commissioning someone else I can do the same for half the price or less

This makes me so happy. The GameCube has always been my favorite system, now it’s getting better and better.

Just installed one yesterday. Stupid easy/cheap for unlocking an amazing system. I have a GCloader on my main Cube and I love it but price and availability is probably what led to this amazing mod.

I feel like the raspberry pi pico could become a go to mod chip board for several systems. Could make modchiping a lot easier

This is such an awesome option, my disc drive is dying on my cube and I was trying to decide whether to install an ODE or replace the laser, I no longer need to worry about that now since this does not require me to remove the optical drive to install, and I can fix my laser if I still want to use my discs

Man I really want GameCube games on switch online since the games are ridiculously expensive these days and having them on the go would be amazing

My PAL GC is already chipped back in the day when the Viper GC Extreme was released, and swapped out the GC shell to accept full size DVD's. Also have the programming board that plugs on the bottom serial port of the GC, I remember this was how I used to rip my original GC discs.
Thought I'd visit this again, read some info and found out that I can install Swiss on the Viper, I got myself the SD2SP2, Im planning to just play off the SD.
Also planning to get another GC for this.
Long story short, just get a Wii or WiiU, soft mod it and use Nintendont for GC games off the sd/ext hdd.

There is also a full optical drive replacement that is no soldering.
It's more expensive, but you can fully convert your GameCube to a cartridge reader.
It can do swiss or you can put games on their own cartridge and use sticker paper to make labels for them based on their covers.

There is a 3d printed mount for the pico specifically for mounting on the gamecube. It will allow for a nice mounting point using 2 screws to hol the pico and 2 that hold it the the gamecube using the acres on the gamecube

always replace the thermal pad if it rips because once it rips you will experience issues with overheating in the future

I bought 4 RPi Picos for 25$ on amazon, $5 each basically. Its cheap and fun, looking into alternative mapper ideas with it for NES. Its also been used to bootstrap N64 games like a flashcart. What a time to love retro!

A lot of people are having the issue when they install it and it not running do to the wires being To long, it’s the power and ground wire and for whatever reason if they are too long they won’t work.
This happened to me after hours of labor and soldering I was so mad so a last ditch effort without re soldering I just cut the power wire and spliced them shorter to see if that was it because I read that a lot of people made them too long.
Sure enough the red and black (note: Color depends on what guide you followed to wire your pico) wires were about 1.5” too long.
These isn’t much resources on this so if you have problems with it not booting into Swiss this is probably why.

Heads up, the GameCube ODE (optical drive emulator) is called GC Loader. GDEMU is the Dreamcast equivalent.
