Should you turn off the heater if you’re not sure what to do? I hear if there’s an issues with the gas valve that’s pretty serious? Thanks

So for everyone who has problems with this honeywell gas valve, honeywell is trash.this is planned obsolescence and is a form of predatory capitalism.
My pilot kept going out. Never had any error code. The water heater has a air intake underneath, damn near impossible to get to to clean. That's on ao Smith for not allowing enough room underneath the waterheater for proper cleaning and maintenance and for having a sealed chamber which requires you to use the ignition button which is unreliable and subject to failure.
The ignition would only spark when I wasn't trying to light the pilot, as soon as I push the thermostat dial in pilot mode, it would not spark.
It is easy to remove the looking glass, so I lit my pilot with the old school method of using a grill lighter then put the looking glass back.
I wasted alot of time with the ignition button, I will never again.
