Australian Winter: The Wave That Broke An Arm

Yes, late July is often swell time in Sydney, but this is ridiculous. The ghost of the pandemic La Niña years came back this week and haunted many wild locations, including the most public yet most wayward of slab reefs, Fairy Bower’s Deadmans. Back in 2020 this spot gave us one of the great rides in the city’s long surfing history — a super clean tube ride by Chris Lougher. July 31, 2024 was not like that, it was wicked, ugly, difficult and spectacular, and it hurt people, just like it did back in 2020. This time the injured party was Duke Kheller, who required an ambulance

Surfline’s water temp has been off by almost 10F degrees in Oside. Said it was 70F the other day and it was closer to 62F.
