From a lifeguard:
Never fight against a rip current always let it take you out, it won’t take you out too far. Once you are out of the rip swim at least 5 metres across then start heading back to shore always save your energy for waving for help. Rips don’t kill you, tiredness does.

For those that don't know, you swim parallel to the shore to get out. If you are tired just relax, theres nothing wrong with floating out a bit and enjoying the view while you catch your breath

As a former surfer, who surfed in the northern coast of the Pacific (Half Moon, Pacifica, Ocean beach) I can certainly tell you that it will take you out very quickly. My first time I was scared sh-tless! I learned from some of the locals how to get out of them and use them to my advantage. 1. Never record yourself 2. Understand what’s happening. 2. Remain calm and go with it. Rip currants usually end. Once you realize you’re out of one, you’ll notice the current evens out. DO NOT swim against it. You’ll only exhaust youself. Remain calm let it take you out. Once you’re at the end of the current then you can swim away from it. Knowing what they look like also helps you to avoid getting into one. These are more common with sand bars. As sand bars shift so too the rip tides. What to look for: a crossing pattern they sort of looks like the number seven or cross patterns. You’ll see the rip tide because they usually are in between the break of a wave

I think some do not kjiw what parallel means. For those who do not know, it means dont keep trying to swim toward the beach, or hotels, let it tske you out and relax, once it takes you out so far, swim sideways until you are out of the current. Betrer to have to walk a disrance back and be alive.

I’ve had to rescue people 3 times from rip current.
1st thing-Look at the surface of the water before entering. Rip currents are easy to spot typically. Looks for a calm area to enter the water.
Rip currents look like a river running in a specific area.
If you get caught in one stay calm. It will decrease in strength as it pulls you out. And you need your strength once it calms down.
Swim sideways with the shoreline.
When surfing, a rip currents is a great place to paddle out into the line up.

Rip Currents are straight up terrifying. Got caught in one a few years back and thought I was done for a moment. Yold myself at that point to quit panicking and fighting against it and was able to finally get out.

When stuck in a current, don't ever swim against it. It'll make you tired so all you need to do it is swim to the side. Eventually it'll take you back to shore. You might be on the other side of the beach but you'll be back on shore, alive

3 deaths in Panama City Beach just happened, and being in the rip current was the reason for it, if you get caught in a rip current, do not fight it, let it do its job, then you swim out of it, panicking and fighting makes it all that much worse, let the current take you, and then swim to safety. Be careful around these beaches guys, you have a lot to live for.

Pretty sure, bro knew what he was doing. He looked perfectly comfortable and in no real danger.

Been dragged out by rip currents a bunch of times, just swim parallel out of it or ride it till the end and swim back, they will never take you out very far and if a person can’t swim back to shore for a few minutes they have no business being in the water at all.

I live in Florida. 6 people have drowned in rip currents in my state in the past few weeks. 3 young men in their 20s all drowned in Panama City Beach this past week. They were all friends and had literally just arrived from Alabama, went right into the ocean at 8pm and got sucked out to sea

Fun fact you float a lot easier in salt water than you do in fresh water, key is do not panic, stay absolutely calm and conserve your energy. As long as you can get air youre going to be ok. Dont fight it just swim perpendicular to the coast line until you stop getting pulled. Then paddle calmly towards the shore. Paddle for a bit, rest, thrn paddle again. Waves tend to push you back to the shore, use natures treadmill to your advantage

it's awesome you were able to post comments while getting sucked out to sea. That's dedication right there.

Tip: when in a rip don’t swim forward swim side ways because it runs straight so if you go to the side you will. Be fine and most importantly don’t panic And more coming
