Welcome back to Iron Sights After Dark! In this episode, I sat down with recently retired cop Nicholas McCarthy who stopped by the studio to share his story for the first time since he took medical leave back in 2021. McCarthy talks about growing up in a Law Enforcement family and befriending his uncle who spent most of his life behind bars. There were two options for Nick: Join Law Enforcement or run the other way. Nick shares that the desire to be a K9 handler motivated him to be a standout cop and after 5 years on the job he was in a position to do exactly that. Without any McCarthy family handouts, Nick put in the work and established himself patrolling the streets of the Bay Area. We've all heard it...If you're looking for trouble - chances are you're going to find it. Nick's relentlessness and passion for catching "The Bad Guy" got him in quite a few really bad situations that he talks about on this show. After leaving his agency over a year ago after an officer involved shooting, McCarthy wasn't able to openly share his career and/or side of the story until now. His retirement papers have been signed and he chose to share his side of the story with the world. Regardless of what the media and/or news has covered, Nick has been: sued, investigated & interviewed by Law Enforcement countless times and his actions and that of his fellow officers have been justified by the law. The goal of this podcast was to listen and share his story publicly for the first time - what can we as a community learn from his life and choices so that we can get better and improve as a whole?

One of my MS told me a good saying. “Don’t always assume everybody has morals and stuff to live for” it’s the dumbest thing you can do in a threatening situation. They will do anything and everything do be the person walking away from the fight, no matter what the circumstances.

“ good cause I was gonna shoot you too.” Might be the most relief this guy could’ve gotten from this situation

The conversation in the car after the fact was more frightening then listening to what led up to it.

That guy, in a weird, criminal sort of way, was looking out for you after you won, trying to make sure that you took something away from that whole encounter. O.o freaky

The most important part is the conversation after that personal revelation

Anybody remember that family that was on the new maybe 2017. I think it was the sister speaking of the death of her brother that was robbing a family home. Well needless to say the young teen was shot and killed for trying to burglarize this home.
The family goes on TV talking about how.

"He loved education. That why he was robbing them because he wanted to buy new clothes for school. He loved education and these people robbed my brother of a very successful life. They did not have kill him. They could have shot him in the leg or something."

That interview stayed with me even now.. because I could not believe my damn ears.

Oakland is crazy. I used to work there as a Paramedic and this is very real. These people in the streets can smell a rookie from a mile away. You get seasoned real quick in oakland from the insanity that you experience there.

Bro that’s why I don’t talk to ANYBODY anymore on the street in California.

There’s way too many people in this world who got absolutely nothing to lose, man.
