8 Things I Wish I Knew Before Starting College!

Hey! My name is Hafu Go and I'm a dreamer. For the past year, I made it my life mission to study patterns of success for students. I traveled across the world to interview students from top schools like Harvard, MIT, and Stanford. These college tips are what I wish I knew before starting my freshman year. Don't make the same mistakes as me.

I remember my first day of college, I felt so lost. Both physically and mentally. First day, I was late for class because I couldn’t find my classroom. And I felt confused because I expected my life to instantly change for the better, yet I still felt a burning sense of angst. I wanted to punch someone every time they asked me “what do you want to do with your life…” Because honestly, I just didn’t now.

As college classes ended recently, I find myself reflect back on my four year experience. I sometimes wonder what advice would I give myself if I could meet Hafu when he was first starting college.

You’re not gonna talk to 90% of your high school friends

If you only go to class and nothing else, you’re not gonna have a good time.

Your greatest memories will come from what scares you the most. Use fear as a GPS for things that will help you grow.

Do cool things in the summer. Screw summer school.

Figure out what you want in life. There’s no better chance to do it than in college. If you don’t do it now, you never will. How? By pursuing your interests.

Don’t be afraid to be different. Everyone in UBC Sauder wanted to go into finance or accounting. I went into marketing. Everyone in marketing wanted to work in consulting or brand management. I went into digital marketing and started my own YouTube channel.

You will fall a couple of times in college. But that’s okay. You’re young. So you’ll heal quickly like the wolverine. So dare to dream! Use your fear as your GPS towards personal growth. When it comes to usual asian family setting, my parents always pressure me to study hard and perform best at class which actually makes me nervous and feel more pressure as I am about to enter college as well.
Thank you for this video, it was really helpful. It made me realize that mistakes are still important to grow and improve and ofc I have to enjoy the experiences and challenges given to me.

This video is so helpful! I am 21 almost 22 and I was homeschooled all my life. I am praying/considering college. I want to study music and possibly theater. I am scared to death. Having never been at a school with a lot of people and classes. That last part especially was inspiring for me! Thank you! 🙏🏻☺️
