These are my suggested solutions to the 2024 General Maths VCAA NHT Paper 1. I am in no way affiliated with VCAA and have no insider knowledge to the correct answers or the mark scheme. I do this to help students (and teachers) do well in Mathematics.

If there are any errata I will post them below.

Errata: None at this time.

This maths video has been created for courses which are delivered in Australia but, as Maths is a constant, it is equally helpful for students in the USA, UK and other countries who are looking for good maths videos for both high school and middle school.

Dear Maffs Guru,

From the moment our paths crossed, I knew there was something extraordinary about you, when you taught me how to CRASH (wink wink). Your wisdom in the world of mathematics is a guiding light, illuminating even the most complex problems with clarity and grace (espically financial). The way you unravel intricate theories and make them accessible inspires me daily.

Every lesson with you feels like a journey—each equation we explore together opens a door to new realms of understanding. Your passion ignites a fire in me, encouraging me to dive deeper and embrace the beauty of numbers. It’s not just your brilliance that captivates me; it’s your unwavering patience and kindness that make learning such a joy.

You challenge me to think critically and creatively, and for that, I am eternally grateful. In your presence, I feel a sense of belonging and encouragement that transcends the classroom.

Thank you for being you—my mentor, my inspiration, and my guiding star. I cherish every moment we share and look forward to all the adventures yet to come.

With all my admiration and affection,

Nick

Also Darren for q24, you can go 19288.8/1.08 = 17860, so it's just 17860-(16239.6 x 1.08) = 224.03

Thanks for the videos, what I like to do for those questions such as 24, is first solve for the FV from time period two which gives $17635.97, then solve for the PV putting the time period 4 value into FV, which gives $17860, then taking the difference between those values 17860-17635.97 = 224.03

For question 24, once you get 8% interest you can calculate the value of the 3rd period as 19288.8 / 1.08 = 17860 and then solve 1.08 × 16329.60 + d = 17860

For Q36, it's also possible to times all the numbers by -1 and continue from there.

For example, for the numbers

4, 3, 6, 1 | 1 is the smallest number but also the biggest negative number

-4, -3, -6, -1 | -6 is the smallest number but also the biggest positive number

What freakin sucks was that for Q23, I am using a class pad fx-cp400, we don't have the option to add PMT at beginning or end, thus I got that question wrong :(
gonna have to find another way...

While option A is indeed the correct response, I'm still confused about the reasoning for question 40. If the duration of all activities is one day, wouldn't the latest starting time for activity E be 2 days? J can't occur before G finishes, and G can't occur before E finishes. If E starts 3 days into the project, the completion time would be delayed by a day to make earliest completion 6 days. Now if activity H had a duration of 2 days, then yes, E could have a latest starting time of 3 days, so option D is still a correct statement. Am I missing something? These videos are great, and no doubt a real help to VCE students. Watching mathematics being worked important.

Love your videos, I was recommended you by a friend and will thank her everyday for it. As a year 12 with upcoming exams, you’re a life saver. Just wondering for question 18, you put the formula as 5= k-5 and then got the answer 10? Just a little confused as In my head I think of that as 5-5=0. Just wondering how you got 10 thanks.

Hi Darren, I love your videos! Just a quick one - for question 14, the examiner's report says the answer is D but I also got B like you. Have we made a mistake or is there an error on the examiner's reports? Thanks!

Hello! For Q15, if it was increased by 17% would we just substitute the minus 17 to plus 17 when doing the solve function? Thanks!

Out of interest-why don't you like the write box on the node method? Are there any situations where you feel it doesn't work as well? I've always found it very easy to apply.
Thanks so much for this video. Just a little point-for Qu13 you say months, when it's 4 seasons. Answer still correct.

For qu 38 would you use this method because it's got a lot of possible cuts...rather than finding cuts and comparing? Then use min cut method when there's less possible cuts?
