This song kind of breaks my heart. As a little sister myself, I know Zoe is hearing this as a last and only connection to her big brother, taking comfort in that fact that he noticed her and loved her. but it's all lies. These aren't the words of a loving brother that was so proud of and loved his little sister, who he felt too estranged from to talk to, like Zoe thought she was hearing. These are just the thoughts of a boy in her class enamored with her but lacking the courage to act on it without hiding behind some kind of excuse.

october 17th, 2020, i lost my older brother. it still breaks my heart to listen to this song. i've been sobbing for hours now after watching the movie. my mom always tells me how much he loved me, even if i don't remember him all that well. it's so hard to cry over someone that you miss so much, even if you didn't know them that well.

the last thing he said to me in person was "you're ungrateful."

the final thing he said to me, the night before he died, was "i love you."


i still message his account sometimes. i'll never get an answer.

legit had no idea this was from a musical the first time i found this song. i figured "Dear Evan Hansen" was the name of an alt-rock band or something. i can't remember what i was looking for on YouTube, song lyrics probably, i didn't find the video i was looking for, but this popped up, and i've really been digging it. sounds pretty awesome! it's _really_ good at capturing the mood it's trying to portray.
