Mainland China launched unprecedented military drills near Taiwan the day after US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited the self-ruled island. The largest exercises ever staged by the People’s Liberation Army in the Taiwan Strait, began on schedule at midday on August 4, 2022, and included live-firing in waters to the north, south and east of Taiwan. The island’s defence ministry reported that 11 Dongfeng ballistic missiles were fired by mainland forces in waters around the island. The last time the PLA fired missiles into waters around Taiwan was in 1996.

Taiwan was returned to China October 25 1945. Kuomintang lost the civil war and fled to Taiwan December 7, 1949. Technically the civil war never ends. This is like the south lost the US civil war but they fled to Texas.

Be rest assured, Taiwan will not retaliate.
Let China do all those drills, as long as No one Taiwanese get hurt, that would be a different story.
This is the reason PLA announces where they will conduct their military exercise to avoid human casualty.
Also, if there's a war, Taiwan will suff heavy losses but I don't think it will be under CCP control that fast. The war will dragged on for months until no abled Taiwanese can fight.
