Find Your Voice by Following the Joy

Today I’d like to talk to you about the importance of joy in making your work. I’m not saying your life needs to be joyful to produce good work, but joy in the making of your work is crucial. When we do what feels good, easy and free, it shows. When we restrict ourselves, the painting feels that way. It feels tight, contrived and not unique.

Do what feels good with the paint. Your emotions will come through whether it’s a happy, sad or angry painting. Your paintings will look better and you’ll enjoy the process more.

This video is like taking a much needed a breath of fresh air.The Joy in painting, in being creative is so important, it's motivating and inspiring, but it's easy to lose it sometimes. But painting has always been a source of joy for me, picking up a brush reconnects me to myself and gives me a way to engage with the world again.I have had some dark times in my life, but my art has always been the thing that has lifted me out of them in the end, the joy of being able to paint again is almost palpable.And onc you tap into it it does somehow infuse itself into your work, it really does and I think people looking at your art can see this.People talk about the joy of painting, in a throw away way at times, but I have always believed it's a very real part of our creative journey as an arrist it's what keeps as working, painting experimenting.When a painting works or comes together as we hoped it would there is a real joy in that sense of achivement and it motivates us to keep going to progress.I think joy is a very real and important part of our creativity it really is, a love of what we do as an artist is so sustaining.And it gves more substance to our voice as an artist, we are constantly evolving out own unique visual language and once we have found our voice it is an amazing think, that click when things fall into place as we work.The need for joy in our creativity can't be underestimated and it stengthens our voice on our work.

I fully agree with what you are saying about the joy that comes from being fully engaged in one's art making process. It does come through in the art but importantly, as a qualified Art Therapist, I know that it is therapeutic for the artist, even if they don't realize it at the time or have particular "issues" that they are dealing with.
