Why during the positive half cycle the current doesn't go through diode D1 as well, when coming back from the resistor, and instead it only goes through D3? Logically, for me at least, it seems like it should be able to go through D1 as well and back towards intersection point a, through diode D2 and short the circuit, but that never happens. I am still trying to find an answer about that but it's possible that just my knowledge of electricity is kinda lacking.

How about describing how to know which leads on rectifier are AC and which DC so I can hook it up?
