Understand this BEFORE trying to change your range of motion #physicaltherapy #physicaltherapist

The development and shape of the body plays a huge role in what your range of motion will be. It makes no sense to try to achieve “normal” range of motion with an “abnormal” structure.

Anteversion is the angle formed by the neck and shaft of the femur.

A normal hip has about 8-15 degrees of anteversion. With this shape, you can shoot for normal ranges of motion.

Excessive anteversion is greater than 15 degrees. With this shape, you can expect more internal rotation than external rotation.

Retroversion is less than 8 degrees a reversion. With this shape, you can expect more external rotation than internal rotation.

To understand your femoral shape, perform the Craig’s test and standard range of motion tests.

Craig’s test:

1. Patient plays prone with examiner on the opposite of the side being tested
2. The examiner palpates the greater trochanter while passively internally rotating the leg
3. The examiner stops the test when they feel the greatest prominence of the trochanter in their hand. This is ~ to position of the trochanter parallel to the table.

Greater than 15 = anteversion
Less than 8 = retroversion

As we can see, my girlfriend is anteverted. She walks with her feet pointed in. I have slightly retroversion and walk with a bit more ER from the knee down.

Different shapes, different measurements, different strategies. Know what you are looking at and don’t try to fit everyone into the same box!!

If squat university and the "stay flexy" guy taught me something, it's that there's nothing stopping someone from increasing strenght, flexibility and mobility just as well as the next guy. Nice vid by the way
