75 years on since the partition of British India into two independent states, some elderly survivors are reminded of the conflict, through the symbolic and religious tattoos which saved their lives.

About 12 million people were displaced and up to a million lives were lost.

India was split into religious lines, Muslims on one side in Pakistan with Sikhs and Hindus on the other.

It is one of the biggest movement of people the world has ever seen.

During partition, some South Asian families would have their names, symbolic or religious tattoos in the same place so they could be identified in the chaos.

It's amazing how the BBC is covering this story as a religious dispute between Indian Hindus and Indian Muslims while negating 3 centuries of divide and rule.

As a white Brit
I hang my head in shame
We as a country did many
Stupid things thinking we were helping, but without thinking
And asking those who would be affected.

BBC always say people killed in religious riots, but they wouldn’t put a bit of blame on English rulers for all that chaos..!!!!

Long before the British came to India, Hindus and Muslims lived peacefully. The question we need to ask is what happened that things took such a bad turn after 200+ years of British rule. The British have blood of millions of Indians on their hands

Although this is a very sad part of their history, it is fascinating & interesting to learn of. And good or bad, these stories are meant to be told.🐾🌈☮️🇨🇦

That's why my daadi also has a tattoo on her hand; she told me that her parents forced her for that tattoo during partition time.

Did the 🇬🇧British also Partition 🇧🇩Bangladesh & 🇲🇲Myanmar out of India in a similar way for ☪Muslim & ☸Buddhist-majority countries like 🇵🇰Pakistan (as Burma was British India's largest province whilst Bengal was the most-populous)?

Just curious if anyone knows, were ☸Buddhists, Jains, Parsis (Zoroastrians), Jews & Christians also caught-up in this migration along with 🕉Hindus, ☪Muslims & ☬Sikhs?

It's a shame that Muslim leaders pushed for partition and that the two religions couldn't live together

People seem to want to have their cake and eat it too, the way they accuse the British of being evil imperialists and yet bemoan ad nauseam Britain giving India and all of those South Asian countries their independence.

Brussels Broadcasting Company (BBC) ?
1995 population 57.9 million people
2022 population 67.9 million people
Liberal & labour open door political system has created ?
But not a single new reservoir has been built since 1991 despite the UK population increasing by 10 million during that time, while climate change has put pressure on existing reserves ?
