I once saw a women have a medusa tattoo and I complimented her on it and said that I can’t wait til I have mine and she hugged me so hard and told me that it never gets easier but we are fighters and I just started crying, we had such a long talk about everything and it felt so good actually talking to someone that have been in the same position and to actually be seen.. I will remember her for the rest of my life❤️

Before the spider web on the elbow meant years served in prison, it used to be a sailor tattoo to represent years spent at sea. Things can have multiple meanings and also change. The elbow is also just good placement for a spider web tattoo, not many tattoos look good on the elbow.

Medusa tattoo is "overused" probably because it's one of most iconic characters from mythology

Spiderwebs on elbows can also mean overcoming struggles in ones life. Not all gang tattoos started as gang tattoos.

As a tattoo artist I can confirm:

People get Medusa more often because she’s a symbol of female empowerment and a critique of the patriarchy.

People get the spider web because they think it looks cool.

People get pineapples because they like the way they look. I have never heard the swingers thing, but out of the three pictures you shared, the last example on the wrists are “right side up” to the people who got them.

People get the phoenix for many different reasons. I think I’ve tattooed it post-divorce more than anything.

And the pin and the hearts might have meant childhood trauma to one person who posted about it online, but I guarantee most people get it because they like the way it looks and it resonates with them some way.

Not every tattoo has to mean something, not every meaning has to be concurrent. There are seriously only a handful of tattoos that people are on the same page about (like a semi-colon, you could also argue a koi). But people get stuff because they like it. And I’m only making this comment so we can stop making silly assumptions about people.

Honorable mention, the semicolon tattoo. I feel like not many people know the meaning of it. It’s something that people who tried to take their own life get. Most commonly done after “healing”

The Medusa tatoo being "overused" is so sad. This rlly should not be happening so much 😢

She looked like she served like 90 years by the look of her elbow.

If fewer people were being SA'd it wouldn't be "overused" in the first place

Fun fact, the tale with Medusa that you hear about is the Roman version! In the Greek version she was always a gorgon with two sisters, though she was the only mortal one and the only one that could turn things to stone with her gaze

“I think the fact that youre getting tatoos in the first place already says that-“

Please remember that if someone has such a tattoo it doesn't have to mean any of these meanings, you shouldn't judge a person on their tattoos if you haven't heard the meaning from someone personally, someone is allowed to get a Medusa tattoo if they just really like Greek Mythology, people are allowed to get Phoenix tattoos if they like Phoenixes and people are allowed to get Spiderweb tattoos if they like those, and any of these are allowed if someone has a different meaning for them than the common one, let people tell you the stories of their tattoos themselves

The irony of sarcastically saying "YeAh, tHaTs thE PROblEm" then overusing the spiderweb tattoo having no idea what it meant.

Friendly reminder to all, tattoos don’t need to have meaning and it is completely okay to get something tatted on your body just because you think it is cool!

The Pheonix is also a pretty common tattoo for burn survivors.
