As a teenager, if my friends jumped off a bridge, I wouldn't do it because teenagers are not known for making the best decisions. But being in my late 20's, if my friends jumped off a bridge, they probably have a good reason!

No way, this only works if you're surrounded by good people. I'm glad you feel this way, but not everyone can say being surrounded by their friends is the only thing that contributes to their happiness. Family and community play a bigger role though. Its tough to explain it, but we are replenished by everyone acting kindly around us, not just our friends. But this is hard to come by these days, especially if one moves to a big city because no one really knows each other and it's difficult to trust new people

This is all facts! I've been thinking about this a lot since moving to a new city for my biglaw job and feeling that isolation/lack of a robust support system.

I love this! What is life without those we care most about. Ultimately you retire from the career you worked so hard for and money is easily spent. Relationships with others matters more than anything else.

Totally agree with your point here about the mismatch between childhood lessons and real world expectations in adulthood. However, I think the jump off a bridge analogy refers to trusting your own judgment and not doing foolish things just because those around you are doing them and I think that’s still VERY relevant in adulthood. Things like lifestyle creep and following prescribed career tracks come to mind

I love your content it’s so relatable to the things in my head no one else talks about!
I lived in Arkansas for a few years and now reside is Utah and my best friend from Arkansas is moving out here this summer in 2 months! I’m so excited to finally be able to prioritize our friendship again and grow that and to be able to do small things like grocery shop or random walks with my friend being close, it really is the little things!

At the end of the day we only have so much room for trial in our own lives and others people’s experiences can help guide us in certain decisions. Although with reviews so available to us nowadays I wonder how many of the decisions we take are truly done in an individualistic way without pondering other people’s prior interactions or thoughts.

i never considered the word "friends" to be important in that adage, it was always more about relaying the dangers of any societal pressure into making a decision which is easy to rationalize on your own as unhealthy for you personally, because peer pressure and desiring to fit in is such an ingrained biological pull, sometimes even putting ourselves in harms way in the process, more often mentally than physically

Making friends with your family members, especially siblings or cousins, and living near them is another great way to live

"If your friends jumped of a bridge would you?"
They say those things
(I am mostly talking adults) but they want to be as successful as other people
Make more money than other people
Get better grades than your classmates

The quote ircks me as people think I am not capable enough to make my own decisions and it's way overused

i also feel like school taught us competition when adult life is almost always about working together and not really a rat race

CeCe, I am at a point in my late twenties where I HAVE to jump of a bridge, but it's MY bridge. I am proud of my close friends for jumping of their proverbial "bridges", too. It's not that I need to follow them off the same bridge but I need to follow them in the jumping. Hope that makes sense; your short resonated with me.

To maybe speak of an extreme example, following friends can be exciting but one possibility can be that they can lead you to implode 13000 feet in the ocean

If all my friends and family are jumping off, I can not live too. I will jump in too.

Why should the locus of happiness be external? In other people. People should find peace and happiness within themselves

I’m so sorry if you’ve answered this previously, but I’d love to know where your under eye patches are from.
