'Pensioners Spend On Cigarettes And Alcohol, They Don't Winter Fuel Allowance'

Sir Keir Starmer will warn that the UK's problems will deepen before improving.

In a speech on Tuesday, the Prime Minister is expected to blame the "rubble and ruin" left by the Conservatives, insisting there are no quick fixes. He will also accuse the previous government of hiding the true state of public finances.

The Conservatives, however, claim Labour is exaggerating a financial crisis to justify tax hikes. They have also demanded Starmer reverse cuts to winter fuel payments, arguing they will leave pensioners "in the cold."

Peter Cardwell speaks with broadcaster Michael Crick and political commentator Charles Amos.

I worked bloody hard 44 years, I don't smoke or drink but if I had the money to spend on smoking and drinking I've rather spend on keeping warm. Shame on you

How dare you. I dont smoke or drink alcohol and have not had a holiday for the last 10 years. This is exactly what is wrong with todays politics . Stop the winter fuel allowances but let the privileged politicians claim heating allowances on their second homes. Why are you so surprised that such a large percent of the populace have no respect for you.

I'm a pensioner. Worked all my life, paid taxes, still paying taxes. Don't smoke or drink. How dare you assume what we do. You are unbelievable

Why give away £20b to climate control overseas, why not put this country first for a change?

Hang on we paid National Insurance and Income Tax for Our Pension over 40 Years. And this Mug is telling us we cannot expect to have a Pint or a Holiday. We gave our Fruits of Labour to provide for the Generation of Pensioners before us. We also provided the majority of the Money on Education. And Sadly it Produced a prat like him

So, let me get this straight. No money for pensions, or disabled etc, but, lots for illegal immigrants. Yep! sounds like a Labour boffin to me.

The people he insults are:
- the now retired midwife, nurses, and doctors who helped him take his first breath
- the now retired teachers who taught him to read, write, and count
- the police officers and soldiers who kept him safe
- those who built his shelter to live in
- the farmers who worked tirelessly to put food on his plate
- the driver instructor who taught him to drive (or the drivers who drive him places)
- the council workers who sanitised the roads he lives on
I could go on and on.

Are they all undeserving of a dignified retirement, Mr Amos?
Could you have survived and taken on their jobs to sustain yourself on your own? I didn't think so. With your logic, Mr Amos, all those individuals should have the right to refuse you a service unless you pay the price they demand.
I'm a millennial who will probably never get to retire, but unlike you in your privileged little world, I understand the meaning of '' community '' and I don't blame older generations who only want the best for mine but are trapped as much as I am. Those retired or retiring were the ones who guided me through childhood - it's not always about money, Mr Amos!

This pensioner 80 yr old, has never smoked, nor drinks alcohol. My husband, 86 has Alzheimer’s and I’m his carer. We can no longer go on holiday and my pension is just above the government limit for the winter fuel allowance. I still find a little money for charities and help others. Thanks a bunch.

How dare Mr Amos say pensioners spend all that money on restaurants, holidays, alcohol and cigarettes! I have never smoked, never drunk alcohol, never gone to restaurants, and my last holiday was about forty years ago when my children were small and I took them camping. I'm 74, and have to count every penny. Mr Amos is an example of how blind people with power are.

Westminster has a bar and a restaurant which is subsidised by the taxpayers so that members of Parliament can have cheap meals and alcohol .

If you come over in a rubber boat they put you in a hotel, give them a phone and spending money.
If you are born here living on the street they couldn't care less.
I have worked all my life since leaving school and for what, freeze in the winter.

87-year-old, don't drink or smoke. Winter heating allowance for pensioners scrapped to help pay the billions spent on immigrants, immigrants who have never paid a bent penny into the system. Sounds fair🙃

How can anyone say the pensioners 'don't need' and to excuse them of lying when they say its heating or eating. How dare they accuse them of wasting money on cigarettes and alcohol. This man needs to be put in their position for a year and then come back and see if he feels the same. This man is a disgrace and should be ashamed of himself.
