Why do people HATE Jang Wonyoung?

From singing, dancing to eating and even just breathing, Jang Wonyoung has never failed to stirred up the Internet and for that, it’s not an exaggeration at all to say that she has now surpassed BLACKPINK’s Jennie to become the most contentious, and probably even controversial, female idol of all time. At first, people only bashed her for questionably taking over the center position in Produce 101 but as time passed and Jang Wonyoung also gained more exposure, she has been found as the center of countless controversies on the Internet. So why does everyone hate her so much?

As someone who has worked in advertising for the past 10 years I can tell you that Papa John's Pizza controversy was actually intentional NOT by Wonyoung but by Papa John's themselves and the ad agency in charge of making it. The whole point is to go viral and clearly they were well aware of the strawberry controversy of Wonyoung and wanted to capitalized on that fact so they instructed her to eat that pizza in that fashion in order to create controversy and guess what it worked as everyone is talking about Wonyoung eating Papa John's Pizza. And that was the whole point.

I don't think People hate her because she's pretty, that's a very ridiculous and childish defense from her fans. There are so many beautiful kpop idols out there, and some are even prettier than her, and more talented than her, but never gets hate as much as she does.

In the spotlight since she was a teenager and used by her company, I think it can't be easy to have to step out of her image. She tries to be perfect all the time, whether it's her behaviour or her looks. I don't think the haters realise the impact it has had on her development and her mind.

Ok, I don't hate her but sometimes I feel like her company is making her act extra pretty and cute. Sometimes she kills it but sometimes it just looks weird and forced... I hope whoever is making her do it, the company or herself, realizes it and tones it down...

Edit: I just wished she put more energy into her vocals and dance not into looking pretty all the time for fans. Her vocals are pretty good. And she does moderately well in dancing. I just wished she concentrated and polished her talents more than her looks.

I don't think it makes sense for people to say that she's hated just because she's a "visual queen" or because she's pretty. Every gen has had a visual queen. From Sung Yuri, to Yoona to Irene or Jisoo, but none of them got the amount of hate that Wonyoung does and I think a large part of it is because of the persona that we all see. None of us know how she really is behind closed doors, so I don't want to say that her personality is bad. But there are definitely things that she does that is slowly annoying kpop fans. From very obviously rushing past Gaeul and other members to get the center position in pics, to not bowing properly to idols on MuBank, to the overdoing of expressions that don't seem genuine. Additionally, Starship stays setting her up by consistently giving her the best outfits or more lines in IVE's songs over the groups main vocalist. The mixture of it all is slowly making people look at Wonyoung in a bad light. Which was never the case for previous "visual queens".

Speaking for myself too. I used to adore Wonyoung and never understood the negativity around her. But recently, I see myself losing more and more interest in her because her personality just isn't that desirable to watch anymore for me. International fans make up a large portion of kpop fans as a whole. And recently, idols with easy going, humble and humorous personalities are drawing more fans.

If Starship or Wonyoung don't change, I don't see Wonyoung being as hyped in the future as she is now.

As someone who is a 2nd gen kpop stan. Its sad to say that I'm knowing these 4th gen idols not by their music but with their "scandals" that are very petty. Looking back the fandom today makes the toxic fandom back then look like angels.

Wonyoung was a maknae back in Izone era, so everyone protected her from the hater. Now, she is not maknae anymore. She needs to understand how much pressure she can get to stand in the center of the group. Being the center, it means more spot light, more fame, more popular, but at the same time it’ll be more hate. Everyone already knew that she’s beautiful but her vocal or her dancing skill is something. For a 5 years idol, I think people expect more than just visual. Looks at Sakura, she got so many criticism for her vocal. At least, she put a lot of effort to improve it, but in Wonyoung case, people don’t see that effort. Starship ent should know better what public want from her, but they ignore it. It feels like Starship try to play with fire to gain popular for IVE. Wonyoung is a victim of poor management or poor marketing plan.

Wonyoung is a prime example of what can happen if you debut children. Since I*ZONE, Wonyoung has been praised for her looks, tho she also got praised for her personality, this was bc she was a child and knew how to "let loose" and be a child.
Wonyoung has always had pretty visuals, Her I*ZONE members, her management and probably even normal non kpop people has said that she looks gorgeous, so as a kid, naturally, you will of follow what gives you the best benefit or what makes the adults around you happy, which is to show how pretty she is.
Wonyoung has been in training since she was 13, getting told that her visuals are pretty and that she should keep looking pretty, getting directed in how she can look her prettiest on camera. now she's 18, only barely reached adulthood, and all her childhood life she's been guided in how to look her best at almost every angle, so naturally, as this praise and encouragement hasn't stopped, she can now detect herself on how she can look her prettiest for the camera. just look at the strawberry scene, she makes glances at litterally every camera when taking the bite of the strawberry before actually biting down on it fully.
As a child you would mostly follow what the older people told you to bc you were a child, now that she's an adult, she sees how happy it makes her company to see her looking pretty, so ofc she continues to do so. its a very natural response to have in a work enviroment.
Wonyoung is hyperfixated and aware of how she looks, bc of how she was brought up being in the spotlight at SUCH a young age.
I don't blame Wonyoung for her bahaviour, I blame all the adult people around her for brainwashing her into thinking that all people care about is her looks.

I really hope Wonyoung realizes that people will love her just as much even if she "let's her guard down" for a bit. as a former Wiz*one, I miss Wonyoung's playful energy. yes she was a child in I*ZONE but the playfulness she had wasn't ONLY bc she was young. And now in IVE Her spark is slowly fading away bc of her hyperfixation on looking pretty. It's like she had her personality AND her visuals, but bc no adult praised her on her personality, she decided to abandon it everytime she goes on screen, which is very sad.

i get defending her for all the times she was being criticised for baseless accusations but stans still coming up with excuses for her seems like another reason why this issue has come to such an extent. ofcourse no one should be bashed for eating a strawberry or a pizza but being an idol, not singing while being seated is a valid reason to criticise. when i saw the clip of her asking liz to seitch places i myself was taken a back since i assumed all the airport vids had to have an explanation. this is so unexpected and sad.

People acting like the problem is Wonyoung's personality truly have never watched a single izone or ive content. It's ridiculous. The only reason you dislike her is because she makes you insercure. She's pretty and cute, she knows it and plays off of it. So what? Literally all idols do that. And everyone of them get praised for their confidence or being extra expect for Wonyoung. Regardless of anything, you should always choose to ignore an idol rather than hating her, if some idol is not giving you the vibe you need, no need to bash her, she certainly don't deserve that.
Also Starship should pull her back a bit, they are really making complete use of her fame and I don't think Wonyoung even gets to time to sit and think quietly or to spend quality time with her group mates.
Also they should resume IVE 1, 2, 3 quickly, the group through different activities will grow even more closer and put rest to coworkers allegations.
