Ian, I agree about the racquet face being open causing the long sailing shots. It could also be when the contact point is too far back where the racquet face is still open. As the racquet head is moving forward it squares up somewhere in front and if the ball is hit way too early when the contact point is back and the racquet face has yet to square up, the ball is also going to sail long. When this happens the amount of top spin also reduces. Correct contact point will also restore the top spin to bring down the ball. Thanks.

Your guiding slow forehand is basically how I hit every forehand during a match becos I'm so afraid to hit it out:(

Personally I was able to improve my hitting angle by paying attention to the orientation of my racket in follow through. This ensured that it was not tilted upward at the point of strike. Sometimes if I play the ball too early, much in front of the body, the racket tends to tilt upwards.

Great video as usual Ian and Ira!!! This problem is very similar to the second serve video you recently covered. The diagnoses that most people come too is that "I swung too fast". In reality, accelerating the racket and having a "confident stroke" plus adjusting the racket face slightly at the contact point is the answer. When a player decelerates or "pushes" the next shot the problem still would remain...
Thanks so much.

The ball is long because the ball was struck in front of your ideal strike zone. This is where your racket face opens naturally because it's in the extended zone of your swing. Assuming your forehand technique is solid, to compensate use your footwork to position yourself to the correct position or use less drive for that shot only and wait for the next ball. You will discover then how important timing and positioning really is.
This advice about closing the racket face will impart more spin at the cost of drive so I would not recommend this.
Respect. I am only a recreational tennis player myself but I love it when tennis becomes scientific.

Dear Ian I'm a club player. I'm playing tennis since last 10 years & learned tennis from youtube videos. When I play forehand slow I can place ball comfortably. But when I try to play faster my forehand 50 -60% lands out baseline. I try to play ball when it starts to drop. My grip is semi western. My questions are
1. Should hit ball on the rise
2. Hit at maximum height or
3. When starts to drop?
Please make a video on this. Thank you.

Additional advise: loosen your for more control (4/10), shoulder still at contact and upper body bending forward during hitting.

Doesn't it mean not enough top spin?

In my case it's more about timing. I can't seem to wait until it's more close to me, so I tend to hit it too far in front of me. I know it happens, but it's so difficult to change

hahaha yeah, its so annoying cuz even when you know that hitting the ball softer isn't the answer, its so hard to commit fully to the next swing when you're scared of missing haha. Ironically, this just results in missing long again because when I'm scared my swing is hesitant resulting in me catching the ball later and my weight is shifted back. Recently I have been focusing a lot on making sure my arm motion is really loopy and that I follow through completely to make sure I'm using my shoulders and getting that low to high motion. Its been working well, but I never thought to focus specifically on the angle of my racket face and I'll make sure to do that the next time I'm on the court.
