Top 10 Ugliest Cruise Ships

Many people criticize cruise ships for being ugly. Even those who don't know much about ship design or how beautiful passengers ships were in the past can recognize a truly ugly ship when they see one. When compared to traditional ocean liners, most modern cruise ships are unattractive, but there are some which stand out in this regard. This is my list of the top 10 ugliest cruise ships.

This video is part of the GBM Vlog Series (#8).

Not gonna lie, Scarlet Lady does resemble a hotel placed on top of a barge.

It is hard being a cruise ship enjoyer when literally your favorite ship you've ever been on was put 9th place on this list

But also I want to set a "challenge" you could call it. I want you to now make a list of, in your opinion, the best looking cruise ships. But here's the catch: You cannot use Cunard (more specifically the QM2), or any cruise ships that were once ocean liners but got converted.

I like the Scarlet Lady I think she represents where modern cruise ship design is going in the future. I understand that she is nothing compared to Ocean Liners however i think she is a bold ship and stands out from other coppy and pasted ship designs

I've always thought the Sapphire Princess looked nice compared to other cruise ships.

But there is one ship that is kind of conflicting. It’s that the Cunard Queen Elizabeth has all of those features to be considered ‘Ugly’, like the superstructure blocks and the flat stern. It’s just that Cunard has a unique charm to it that you don’t get with other cruise lines!

I would personally disagree with you on scarlet lady, I would say she’s one of the more graceful of the floating hotel variants, she has this modern and sleek look which mixed with her color pallet complements the whole aesthetic. Which other ships such as those from royal Caribbean (particularly the oasis class) don’t do as well, as they very much look blocky with their size and not to mention their color pallet doesn’t help much differentiate from a boring blocky hotel. Also I feel like scarlet lady does the whole bow superstructure thing better than other ships who have attempted it. But that’s just my opinion.

I have cruised on the Caribbean Princess and I love the Skywalker Lounge. It's a great reading room during the day with a nice view. It definitely looks ugly from the outside though. The bridge wing supports are also unattractive, but the concept is what drew me to the Grand Princess for my first cruise (Alaska). I saw a photo of the platform with people on it and thought "I want to be there". Sadly, some Princess ships no longer allow passengers to access that space.

Icon of the seas should top this list imo. That bulbous front end makes it look like a Barreleye fish.

the Shopping Cart handle ship I always thought it looked cool. I always thought it was more like a spoiler you see on supercars

All I see is a soulless council buildings that float. Pretty much no more traditional ship characteristics.

The last one should have been named Norwegian Nightmare.

Hmm, interesting video.

I would only disagree with your comment of AIDAnova’s livery that you consider outdated.

The livery is more or less the same for *every* AIDAship ever since the first AIDA (the late AIDAcara). This is the brand‘s key image that sets every AIDAship apart from the (bland) competition. One of the best-known brands in its core market in Germany.

Replacing the livery would be like changing MickeyD’s arches or Coke’s flowing lines because the look so roundish…

A ship without the Kissing Mouth is no AIDAship. They’ve managed the trick that people don’t go on a cruise on ship X by cruise line Y.
People go on an *AIDAcruise*. (“We’ll sail on AIDA”) The distinct ship is often less of a priority.

I don't know, I think MSC World Europa's design has alot of charm to it.

I like the knife edge bow, I like the shaping on the top if the superstructure (even if it is only a facade)

I like the superstructure going all the way to the tip of the bow, it makes it look modern and sleek like a fish.

And even though the stern isn't the best, i like that they bothered with shaping it at all, compared to the gaping maw of the Oasis class' stern.

I must say Carnival Destiny and her sisters were done a very big favour by Carnival's trademark funnel, which does a lot for them and distracts from the arguably stubby bow and the apartment block look of all the balconies. A good funnel can do wonders
