Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion – the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me – from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

The 30-06 is a benchmark that is dang hard to beat considering recoil, barrel life, and killing power. If a 30-06 is not enough gun, one would need to jump up to a 375H&H to get a decent jump in killing power in my opinion.

25^06/270/30^06 is all you need to hunt just about anything that walks in North American Continent period. I have bagged a ton of stuff with a 30/30, 28 gauge, 16 gauge, 12 gauge and I kept the freezer full with these and if I was ever in trouble I would keep my S&W .357 just in case. Good Good bless no one I know

I put a mag fed kit on my rem 700, now holds 10. Plus it’s a great look with the Houge FDE stock.

One of the biggest mistakes the US Army ever made in cartridge development was what we know as the .30-06 Springfield (Rifle Caliber .30 M2). The reason I say this is because of the 7x57 Mauser that had easily out-gunned the .30-40 Krag. Instead of adopting a more efficient, higher sectional density bullet/bore diameter, they doubled down on .30 bore with more powder, more recoil, more muzzle blast, and more rifle weight. This isn’t to say .30-06 is a bad cartridge, just that it was the wrong one for the job.

They almost redeemed themselves with the .276 Pedersen in the 1930s, but then MacAurthur seized defeat from the jaws of victory and tripled-down on .30-06 even after all the AAR comments and lessons-learned from The Great War.

Then after WWII, Army Ordnance quadrupled-down on the .30 bore with the T65, which we know as the 7.62x51 NATO and commercial market .308 Winchester.

They really would have set us up for success both in military and hunting settings had they gone with a 7mm to replace the .30-40 Krag, and get away from the excessive bore/propellant brute force approach used in .30-06.

The first buck I killed was with a bolt action 12 gauge and rifled slugs. I never felt the kick and I shot at it 3 times hitting it twice. I usually use my 30.06 today. Another advantage is I dont have too pick my shot like you need to with lesser calibers. One of the biggest bucks my father killed was shot with what we jokingly called the Texas heart shot. The bullet landed at the base of the tail and was found under the skin in front of the brisket. That's not a shot I would take with the Creedmore.

All the hype about the Creedmoor, i just bought more ammunition for my 30 06. 👍

The magazine capacity of magnums if you want more than 3 (for whatever reason) is easily solvable. Most bolt action rifles made today will accept after market bottom metal that will allow aics style drop boxmagazines to be used

Remington 700 you can get a magazine and hold 10 😎

30-06 is awesome your shooting boxes and boxes 📦 of high power ammo out of an ultra light rifle

Shooting a 30-378 I definitely lose the magazine capacity game.. 2+1.. but a race car doesn’t hold as many passengers as a minivan either.

.270 Win is a very serious whitetail round, I've had to help track 30-06 deer but never with a .270. My former BIL took an 8 pt buck in northeast Arkansas with a .270 that hit no vitals but it fell were he shot it.

Does anyone know if Remington 700s still rust?

I aint shot my old target with a 30-06, but a .300winmag soft tip punched a clean hole through ⅜in ar500 steel. I feel pretty good about it against game.

Magazine capacity doesn't matter. Choose a gun with a box magazine or convert. You are only limited to your states max capacity limit.

This seem really ridiculous to me. He’s using milsurps to say .30-06 has a capacity advantage??? Then he talks about the model 70 in the same breath. Even this idea of milsurps having greater capacity doesn’t seem necessarily true. Especially since .30-06 on paper is closer to .308 than any true magnum.

Somehow Ron got younger but is sounding older. The 30-06 is too big for deer. If you are American you may feel like it’s too small though. Just close both eyes, shoot, and if the deer still dies, it’s the perfect size gun. Yee haw. I’m so sick of this.

Truth be known there are two reasons people shoot “whiz bang” cartridges.
1. They are shooters that like to tinker with different cartridges.
2. They are crappy shots and hunters hoping a new round will fix their issues.

Beware the man who only has one rifle because he knows how to use it.
