Deadline – U.S.A. is a 1952 American film noir crime film and starring Humphrey Bogart, Ethel Barrymore and Kim Hunter, written and directed by Richard Brooks. It is the story of a crusading newspaper editor who exposes a gangster's crimes while trying to keep the paper from going out of business; he is also attempting to reconcile with his ex-wife.

Plot
Ed Hutcheson is the crusading managing editor of a large metropolitan newspaper called The Day. He is steadfastly loyal to publisher Margaret Garrison, the widow of the paper's founder, but Mrs. Garrison is on the verge of selling the newspaper to interests who plan to permanently cease its operation.

Hutcheson has other concerns, including the fact that his former wife Nora is going to remarry. He also puts his reporters to work on the murder of a young woman and the involvement of racketeer Tomas Rienzi, which could turn out to be a circulation builder that keeps the paper in business or else the last big story it ever covers.

Reporters discover that the dead girl, Bessie Schmidt, had been Rienzi's mistress, and that her brother Herman had illegal business dealings with the gangster. Hutcheson provides Herman with an opportunity to safely tell his story, but Rienzi's thugs, disguised as cops, take him away, resulting in Herman's death.

All seems lost when Mrs. Garrison's daughters, majority stockholders Kitty and Alice, refuse to budge, causing a judge to permit The Day to be sold. Bessie's elderly mother, Mrs. Schmidt, turns up in Hutcheson's office with her daughter's diary and $200,000 in cash, implicating Rienzi in his illegal activities. The presses roll as Hutcheson ignores the gangster's threats.

Brilliant film, better than anything produced today. Bogie was amazing as usual and Ethel Barrymore, the best of the Barrymore clan, was 100% believable. Ethel never played a character she became the character, a mere flick of an eyelid and she conveyed what her character was thinking, GENIUS!

Magnificent film! Portraying a time when true Americans who believed in the righteous principles of this country were willing to stand up for her, fight for her, and defend her! God speed return of those days!

Film historian, Eddie Muller, rates this film as one of the very best films ever made about the inner workings of a major newspaper.

"I"ve got fallen arches, unfixed teeth and you want to know something? never saw Paris." That line gets me every time.

"One more "F" and they won't be drafted." What a line! I wonder how many people today still understand that sentiment.

How ironic, that the algorithm brings this old movie up on the same day that all my Internet sources are celebrating the demise of Sports Illustrated and the near-terminal downsizing of the Los Angeles Times.
In the first reel of this movie, Humphrey Bogart reads form the editorial of the first edition of the soon-to-be-sold newspaper, announcing that it will always fight for reform and progress; our legacy press nowadays repeats the lies of the status quo, and we cheer when the various venues go under.
I read the article by Nicholas Wade about the overwhelming evidence, uncovered this week by U.S. Right to Know, for the manufacture of the covid virus by a Chinese laboratory, and I went to check when he left working for the New York Times (it was 2012); the biography on wikipedia incredibly asserts that Wade's 2022 review of the evidence of a manufactured virus was rejected by the majority of scientific opinion -- as opposed to the truth, which is that it exposed the cover-up and has been amply vindicated by corroborating evidence in the interim.

Thanks Hedda. I Enjoyed the movie. How ironic it is though, to witness the frenzy of the Newspaper of this storylines day, to the media industry of today.

How ironic to hear Bogart (16:39) say "You know, I never got to Paris, either." Made me laugh!!!

February 15th, 2024. Good film noir. Still free for now. Noticed yt has many or most of these classic movies for rent because they realize today's films, for the most part, are a waste of time. I wonder how long until these old b/w movies will no longer be available for free. 🎦
