Have been struggling with the 3 wood recently, since having lessons has vastly improved my iron play! Great video, thanks!

These are Excellent pro tips, all meat no filler! How does this channel not have at least 10X more subscribers? Oh right, it's a crazy world we inhabit.

This is the best golf channel. It’s what the news used to be—not only informational but also to-the-point. It’s certainly possible to spend 15 minutes learning the same thing from the formulaic channels (painfully long intro+request to ‘smash that like button’ +incessant gabbing+nugget of information+more pleas for subscriptions, likes, and comments), but why would you?

I started golf a few months ago. I was hitting none of my clubs relatively straight other than maybe my p and 9i. But I made good-ish contact, woods included. I've concentrated mostly on the irons since then, so I'm reliable enough to hit fairways and distances. I'm at a point now where I am happy enough to go longer.. so I tried my woods again. I can't hit them any more. Not one bit. For some reason, starting with my hybrids up to driver I will just absolutely murder the ground miles before I even touch the ball. I have no clue why but every time I ram the clubhead straight into the ground. Its so frustrating and I fear for my shafts.

As an inconsistent ball striker, address position was my biggest issue. Now that I have a proper setup routine for foot and hand position addressing the ball, I rarely hit chunky shots. In this single season I dropped 6 strokes off my handicap by making my address consistent with each club. Save yourself some frustration and help your muscle memory, make up a 10sec setup routine for each club and you’ll find the miss much faster.

Thank you for that great explanation. That answers a lot of questions.

The one comment I was expecting from you was an explanation as to when would you favour the wood as compared to the long iron. So far I have learnt the hard way that the lie of the ball is very important as if it’s in a divot the iron is safer, as I am more likely to top the ball with the fairway wood. However, if I am on a gentle uphill slope that guarantees me a clean strike then it’s the fairway, unless there’s a risk of it running through the green, in which case the iron is more likely to stop in time. Do you agree, or is this too detailed?

HI Tom, thank you for the great explanation, I noticed that occasionally I hit behind the ball, sometimes I flush the 3 wood, irons. Is there any way you could record a video on all things to watch for when playing the shot to avoid it? For instance, If we throw too early (the hand movement that is so good to imagine), I may hit behind. If I don't post properly and throw, I hook it (collapse on the left side) . If I don't shift weight probably, and so on. If there is a video with examples, it would be so good! I think other members asked. Something to watch before going to the range/course. Appreciate all your insight. The chipping/pitching videos where using the upper body mostly for accuracy are great and they work so well on the course.

And if we have to have a visual of the driver how would you describe it Tom?

Thinking steep makes my long irons (4&5) fade more than I would want them to. And thinking too flat, makes my fairway wood [15 degree] (sometimes) to thin out. And then I have a 19 degree 3 rescue/ hybrid. I get confused if I should hit it like the 3 wood or 4 iron. So far they are not utterly bad contact, but I try not to tweak my swing thoughts around them. 5i onwards, I try to think "long arc".
Also, the balls positions shown here looked different from mine. I place the 3 wood at least half inch inside the left heel in a wide stance. And the 4&5 iron, around one ball left of centre in a standard stance. If I remember all these things, of course!! :-D

For fairway wood it looks like your hands are slightly behind ball. Is that so please?

I would like to know what effect this has on the ball. Does a wood roll more? Does an iron have more backspin? Why do you chose one of these clubs over the other? These are crucial questions for any of your videos
