This is my take on it, as I have been considering the exact same issue: No, don't wait for the S1H2. Why? 1: you don't know how long we will have to wait 2) The S5II is a great camera that will easily hold me over and is a great value, so I won't lose too much money if I want to sell it when the S1H2 is released 3) I can start investing in the Panasonic glass now to pair with the cheaper S5II, and it will be easier to move into the higher priced S1H2 later without having to buy all new Panasonic lenses at the same time. Of course this assumes that you are not currently already a Panasonic shooter who owns glass, which I do not.

They didnt include CFExpress Card because this camera is small change of the base S5 Mark II. Sean said that this S5 line is their entry level camera target to enthusiast. He said the difference between GH6 and S5 is that GH6 is target to professionals and S5 to enthusiast despite having the same price or pricerange. I think the new S1 or other cameras that will sucede this higher cameras will use CFExpress Card.

As me and you have discussed, I do see that in a studio environment where you have complete control of the environment, ssds or external to an atomos will not be a problem. But in the professional field out on paid gigs, relying solely on external recording is just a big no for me.

Also while I get the sentiment that these are the entry level cameras not really designed to for the pros, I do pose a honest question of do we really want to bring new combers into an ecosystem that encourages them to use a very high risk recording option to get the best out the camera? Me I’m not so sure.

I do look forward to seeing what Panasonic will deliver with a refurbished S1H, BS1H and S1. Here’s hoping we see improvements to the readout speed and processor, that’s the big holdback for them now they got past the phase detect AF.

I have preordered an S5II. I might have held off for the S5MKII X, but I can't wait to May/June to get it and need to start recording a video project in early April at the latest and finding the higher recording quality modes need an external SSD put me off a bit as well. I want to use the USB-C port for external batteries as I sometimes do shoots at 5+ hours at a time and need long battery life. I am considering getting an Atomos Ninja V for it and recording to it, even with the slight HDMI lag and if I did go that route, as I want to record in 5.9K and output in 4K, I could use the downscaling in the Ninja V to downscale from 5.9K to 4K.

Watching ProAV TV video on the S5II they said the 4K isn't as sharp as the 4K from the original S5 but the 6K modes are sharper, which is why I want to shoot in 5.9K and downscale it to 4K, to get the best detail and I want to edit and export my videos in 4K.

When it comes to the USB-C port, I really wish Panasonic would have added 2 ports to the X version as you cannot use both an SSD or USB-C battery from the same port at the same time. With my GH6, I used the USB-C port to power the camera and used it for hours at a time without ever feeling like I'd run out of battery power. I agree with you and would have preferred if Panasonic had added at least one CFExpress Type B card slot, then you wouldn't need an external SSD for the highest recording modes and you could use a USB-C battery to power the camera without needing internal batteries and or a battery grip for longer shooting times. I liked using CFExpress Type B cards on my GH6. They are fast and feel far more robust than SD cards. I am not sure why they didn't add them.

I'm also waiting to see about updated S1{, R, H} versions. If they want something to compete with the Canon R5, it would likely be an upgraded S1R, but they might leave that exclusively for Leica to market as an upgrade to their SL2.
Since the current S1H also lacks a CF Express card, it isn't clear what advantage it would have over the S5 IIx. (well other than the obvious optical low pass filter).

I have two S5's right now. I've pre-ordered the S5 IIX to replace one of them and will replace the other with whatever the successor to the S1H turns out to be.

The external recording is via USB C to a is much cheaper than the CF Express Card, so I don't know what you're complaining about! :)

James Jackson decided "no sale" on the S5 II X for the reasons you outlined. I wonder if recording high-res video on a CFE-B card would generate more heat that the fan could reliably handle. Or, if Panasonic just didn't want to design a separate body for the S5 II X. The latter makes them sound cheap, so I hope that's not it.

I've got a used Rebel T3i that I came up on and learned about photography. I want to get in the game. This Lumix s5ii gets me "in the game." I want to do some MMJ, corporate video, commercial AD shoots, weddings, etc. If you think I should wait for the X version of the camera, I'd love advice from you on that. If you think this new Lumix will do fine for my wishes, please confirm that for me. I'll be watching your channel as a subscriber from here on out as I jump in the pool in the biz. I'm an American guy in Japan who speaks intermediate Japanese.

Thanks for the video, brother, I really appreciate your work. I just shot a feature film with the S5 into the into the Ninja V. I got 5.9k RAW prores 422 at 12 bit. It is stunning. The image is poetry. However, if the S5IIX can give me good internal codecs then that gives me back up redundancy in case anything goes wrong with the Ninja, and that's worth paying for. I would not dream of going on a shoot without a monitor and the Ninja is so light and easy to use, with tons of great video tools, it makes life so much easier. But you are right, you go through the micro HDMI cables pretty quick unless you clamp them. I just shot for 30 days straight and I never had to think about the camera once, which is beyond incredible, 5.9k RAW all day long, out of an open box deal I paid 1, 400 bucks for!!!! I might move up to the S5IIX for that redundancy the internal 6k will offer, even if at 420 it is still 10 Bit, and the upgraded IBIS, that could help give some back up redundancy for the Ronan Gimbal if that takes a dive.

What SD card and battery do you recommend for this camera?

@ordinaryfilmmaker will the S5 Mark ii record RAW external to a Ninja V or do you need a Ninja V+? Thanks

I agree, missing out the CFexpress tape B slot is a huge letdown.

Do you think Panasonic will bring us APSC cameras? Or M4/3 with L mount? I think Panasonic need the "one mount" way like Sony, Nikon and Canon. If Panasonic decides for only L mount it will grow sales and could compete in all segments with the other brands.

Another content creator suggested waiting for the S1H, despite the fact that the S1H is $1, 700 more than the S5ii. I'm thinking about the S5iix for it's features and it's $2, 200 price tag. The other models are much more expensive.

As a filmmaker, I have been looking at the Canon C70 because of its pro features especially the internal ND filter settings. Although it is much more expensive than the S5ii or S5iix. I have 5" and 7" external monitors with false color etc. So, I don't need a camera with false color. But, the S5ii and S5iix both have waveforms, which is a great feature for filmmakers.

Other brands have good models. But, not at the price point of the S5ii and S5iix. Unless I acquire a large dump of money, I think the S5iix is a great choice. Also, Panasonic has better skin tones in my experience. So, there's that.

Regarding the possible S1ii and S1Hii, I think Panasonic will wait until after the S5iix is released. I think they risk harming the sales of the S5iix if they release anything before then. But, we shall see. Thankfully, the S5iix is scheduled for release in June. So, who knows what will come out before then. And, like you said, I'd hate to be hit with buyers remorse. In the end, it comes down to my needs. Which model will fit those needs will win out.

From B&H:

6K and 4K Video Recording

In addition to stills, the S5 IIX sports highly capable video recording assets. Full-frame 6K30p recording with 4:2:0 10-bit color can be captured for up to 30 minutes, while unlimited video recording is possible when filming in DCI and UHD 4K60p 4:2:2 10-bit mode. The camera supports 120p video capture for videographers who want to create high-resolution slow-motion video, and RAW HDMI output is possible via an optional license upgrade.

So to video record in PRO Res RAW, one has to pay for a license upgrade? I thought the video perks were with the upgrade from S5 II to the S5 IIX? Panasonic's website is pathetic, almost as bad as their commercials with the crap music. I think Panasonic needs to fire their website director and their ad agency!

is the "external" recording aspect purely via the HDMI output or can it record direct to SSD?

muziqfreek

Keep in mind S5ii x records directly to a usb ssd. There is no need for external recorder. This is what I understood.

Edit: Just confirmed on the specs.. "USB-SSD recording" .. no need for extra investment for external recorder.... direct to SSD over USB-C which is awesome. definitely worth it. GameChanger -- does FX3 do that?
