Many thanks for your detailed hands-on!
I own the original S5 and recently bought a Lumix S5 II and S5 IIx. Unfortunately I had to return both units, because they had exactly the same audio issue:
If you connect an external microphone via the jack audio input, there is a high frequency pulsating sound that doubles its frequency when you switch the frame rate from 25p to 50p. This annoying sound can only be heard very quietly, but it is disturbing in quiet passages during interviews, for example. And yes, it does not go away as soon as you hit record.

This is a step by step guide to reproduce the problem:
1. Set the camera to movie mode in a quiet room
2. Connect an external microphone to the Mic-Port (if it is a battery powered device, you can leave it switched off)
3. In the audio menu, set the „Sound Rec Gain Level“ to „Low“ (in „Standard“ the issue is less pronounced)
4. Set the Audio Level to Zero or + dB to emphasize the issue
5. Put your low impedance headphones on (e.g. EarPods) and note a pulsing high pitched interference sound
6. Press the lens lock/unlock button to make the sound disappear for some seconds
7. Toggle the Movie Recording Options from 25p to 50p to double the speed of the pulsing sound
8. Switch the dial “Movie Mode“ to Manual "M“ to hear the sound change it’s frequency

Please note: This interference do not occur using the onboard mics or the DMW-XLR1 unit.

I'm really excited for Panasonic now; Now that PDAF is solid and Dual Gain ISO is available, their next Cinema Camera (BS1H II) is going to be amazing! I might have to switch again!

Thanks for such a detailed explanation into the All-I and LongGOP formats as well as the streaming options. Your the first Youtuber to specifically talk about these things in such clarity with the S5 IIX. Definitely on my buy list

Makes me hopeful for a S1Hii with internal prores with a new sensor with faster readouts. 🙏

I've had mine for a little over a year. Great camera. I use it for run n gun travel videos. Stabilization is perfect. I shoot everything exclusively handheld, I don't carry any stabilizers or a tripod with me. I combined my S5IIx into a rig with Blackmagic VideoAssist and SmallRig V-mount batteries. A real small cinema camera. BRAW is wonderful to work with in DaVinci.

Very tempting. I shoot the old S5 into the Ninja V, so I already get Full Frame 5.9k RAW Prores 422 at 12 bit. The image is poetry. I shoot narrative film and don't use AF so while PD AF is a fabulous new offering from Panasonic, it does not affect me. The internal codecs and improved IBIS could provide some redundancy for the Ninja and the Ronan Gimbal and that is always welcome, so I am still deliberating. I started out on the old Panasonic DVX 100A, so what I already get out of the old S5 is already mind blowing. What I would really like to see is better handling of rolling shutter, (global shutter full frame???) but I am not complaining. I might have complained if I had bough the S5II and realized I had to pay extra fro RAW while the older model came with RAW on board, or that the S5IIX was going to arrive so soon after as a much better deal.

I've noticed that panasonic cameras consistently have darker blacks on Prores files. Likely a little less DR. If you relook at the test shots for sharpness, the difference really wouldn't be that strong in the 6k h265 vs 5.8k prores if the 6k simply had contrast added to match. I don't believe the prores is actually much sharper looking at the font. Just darker.

I love this upgrade! But I am going to wait for GH7 or GH6ii.

Internal RAW recording patent is with RED. Smart and early patenting is still holding the cameras of this day.

Great overview thank you. I don’t mind the blacked out branding in front but on the buttons is a bit mad. Tipp-ex time! We need much better rolling shutter and UHD 50fps Full Frame, like the A7SIII. Without those it’s not as compelling an upgrade from my S1H. Great for a first time Panny user though. Bring on the S2H!

I would be interested if they used C-Fast type B like the GH6. It’s disappointing that everything useful needs an external SSD, because that USB C port is so damn useful for keeping a charge in the camera during long event shoot days

Panasonic should have implemented led light up that function button. AF is also improve 1080P over S5ii.

The S5 is a video beast so makes sense the updated version would be

Your footage looks great, even on youtube.

We got exactly what was announced with S5II's release, but I'm torn between this camera and the (still unannounced) successor to S1H as I prefer the look of 60fps footage whenever possible (I'm an amateur). One could argue that I could buy now and upgrade later, but it's a hassle I'd gladly skip.

dark labels are neat if you don't want the camera to show in reflections
