Star ratings are the guiding light in Football Manager before you know anything else about the game. You look at those golden beauties and think they are a good indication of overall, but Workthespace and I are here to tell you star ratings on FM are there to fool you! Not really, but we both make a living playing FM so we sat down to guess how high the player’s ability is based on their star rating.

I have no idea how it is going to go, stars are tough on FM in general and very staff dependent, but I have faith that Workthespace and I will find a way to get most of them right. It is possible that we don’t adapt our tactics to the game at hand fast enough, but here I am writing this beforehand hoping that is wrong. Optimism is something that serves you well in the Football Manager world, you heard it here first.

I think the main thing that has to be factored into star ratings is the relative ability of other players playing similar positions at the club

The star ratings you were seeing were the positional and role ability of the player for their best role. So the ideas of age, registration footedness and other positions didn't affect the scores. If you had checked the actual scout reports you may have seen otherwise.

As an avid in-game editor:

1. Star ratings are dependent on relative current/potential ability. Thus, getting a wonderkid with 200 PA will drop the rest of your team's CA star rating significantly.
2. The accuracy thereof also depends on the ability of your scouts/scouting rating of your staff to perceive your players' skill.
3. Being two-footed significantly boosts CA, but seemingly differently depending on the position (it benefits GKs less).
4. Playing multiple positions can actually drop CA, and often does, if a player sucks at a position. Playing multiple positions also doesn't necessarily increase it -- in fact, removing a position can often jack up a player's CA if the removed position was "suboptimal" for his skillset.
5. All the other things they mentioned in the video don't affect the stars.
