The FM Lawsuit is OVER

Manchester United went after Football Manager for a copyright infringement last year and the court case has been settled. This was something that hung over the Football Manager community for the past year, with the potential to change the way FM was put together or maybe put it in serious trouble - no matter how flimsy Man U’s case actually was. The Glazers have some serious muscle.

In a brief announcement, SEGA and Football Manager announced that it had all been settled. It came out of nowhere with little fanfare and no announcement from Manchester United (for PR reasons I would guess). The final result, considering how important this all could have been for Football Manager, was rather strange. Time to break it down and talk about what it means moving forward.

As an American that only was a fan of baseball and knew close to nothing about football, I started playing football manager this year because it looked like an interesting game. My first save was with Leeds United, and after about 100 hours of game time, I am now a die-hard Leeds fan that watches almost every game and planning on getting a jersey soon. I think a lot of sports leagues and teams don't realize how valuable video games can be for getting new fans.

So the owners went to court to make sure fewer people call the club "Man united" but more people call it something that sounds like "manure fc"? This is exactly what a lot of older fans and ex-players have been fighting against for decades. Talk about the owners not knowing the club... yikes

At number 3 it's letting their stadium rust
New in at number 2, the super league
And this week's number 1, for a 52nd consecutive week, suing Football Manager

Their argument would hold more weight if they didn't have an away kit clearly based on Juventus. As a Man Red fan myself this whole situation has been embarrassing. And every FM I work my way up to try and manage them.

My personal philosophy in life is to never sweat petty things and never pet sweaty things. This was a petty thing propagated by some sweaty things. ManU embarrassed themselves with this stuff.

It baffles me from a business perspective that the United board even have a problem with this in the first place. What's so bad about free advertisement?
I find it especially weird when clubs don't allow the FIFA games to use their name/logo because lots of younger football fans choose their favorite teams to support based on those games. Wouldn't that increase brand awareness and merch sales?

One of my personal bugbears, but I think by "copyright" we actually mean "trademark" here. They're both Intellectual Property but are handled very differently in law.
