I Met My Football Manager Hero

It’s the dream of every Football Manager player since the beginning of time to meet the best player in their save… or maybe that’s just me, but I definitely have always wondered what it would be like to meet a player that had become so much in my imagination (and now the imagination of thousands of others).

Football Manager creates infinite possibilities and I suppose every player in it can be a hero one way or another, but 1000s of people will always remember the name Nick McCootie for the rest of their lives, and he had no idea. It’s bizarre to explain that to someone but that is exactly the job that falls to me in this video. It is an amazing experience.

No joke, my first FM game I started as Bath FC. Nick was my star as I muddled my way through it. Then, as I was interested, started to follow him. Turned out he was a really cool guy.

So he's my FM hero as well.

Absolute GOAT.

I am a Chippenham Town fan, one of Nick's former (recent) clubs. Took an instant liking to him when at the unveiling photo he seemed genuinely thrilled to be signing for us (unlike the usually forced smile 99% of new signings show). It must have been our first season in National League South as I did a save with Chippenham (I'm not someone who manages their team every season) and then too he was prolific as we went up the leagues. Found his level at League Two I think, I eventually released him - but he was one of the last original players to get the chop. When we reached the Prem tho I resigned him as a joke from Hendon and gave him a few sub appearances in end of season dead rubbers (we might have been relegated).... despite being mid thirties and shit attributes by then (apart from physical) he actually scored! Proper cult hero in my eyes, shame he moved on from us irl but was nice to see him a couple times this season

FM is so amazing for creating characters, I remember in a save with Wealdstone a few years back I signed Eze from QPR on a free, gave him a nickname and he helped me out to league one from step 6, it's so cool to see his success after what he did for me in the game, so many players from lower leagues you see pop up IRL, the other big one for me is Langstaff this year for Notts in the conference, amazing to see him outperform his counterpart to get to league 2.
