Chris, thanks for explaining so clearly, how to remove the alternator on this type of engine. I bought a 2002 Toyota Tacoma a couple of weeks ago for 10, 000 dollars cash ( the Tacomas 1 st generation, the old ones, are very, very hard to find here, in the island of Puerto Rico, and when we find one for sale, is usually vet expensive ). Sp, I bought mine recently, and yesterday april 14, ' 21, I ended up stranded ; the alternator on the Tacoma died. Had to spend money on the tow truck. So, I decided, I sm gonna fix the problem myself, since I don't hsve money to give away. And, sat at the table to eat my chef boyardee ssd paghettis, and started watchin you tube, and quickly, I was fortunate to find your very helpful video. At the 4:10 mark in the video, he talked about the collar needing to be recessed to get the new alternator in. Mine was stuck so hard I had to remove the entire mounting bracket to get a better position to move it. I used his method but used a bolt, nut, 17mm socket. I had a box end wrench on the nut and a ratchet on the bolt head. It took some cranking, but the collar finally gave way and moved. The mounting bracket for the alternator is held on with three bolts. One bolt is behind the heat shield. It was not hard to remove the mounting bracket, just took a little extra time. In my case, it was worth the extra time.

Made my install so much easier. No removing skid plates and that collar tip saved the day. Never changed an alternator before and did it in 1.5 hrs without any problems, thx!!!

Now I know the secret word to easy no problemo car repair - “Sucker”. Great tips for easy removal and install, adjust the sleeve before trying to take the alternator out so you don’t have to pry it and struggle to fit it back in. Thanks

I did not adjust the collar so it and I got into a physical altercation but ultimately I won thanks brotha for the simple how to. My alt was squealing loud ass hell from here to Mexico on start up for about 30 seconds

Now I gotta locate my curved vis grips; channel locks won't work. I didn't move the dipstick, but did remove the rear bracket for the battery cable ... I could not get leverage to remove the 3-wire harness otherwise (2004 Tacoma.)

Oh, and original alternators have the battery cable also secured to the alternator with a one-use plastic clip. PITA.

Just to make sure, that collar needs to stay in the exact same position and that's why you used the socket and vice grips?
