Much of what we know about the first slaves in America comes from what archaeologists have discovered. One site in particular stands out: the former home of a young African slave woman named Angela.

I've always wondered how the Angolans got names like Margarita, Juan, and Pedro

It was Dutch ship docked at Jamestown in 1619 with 20 black people...The Dutch had stolen from a Spanish ship 14 men and 6 women...Historians do not know for sure if this people were sold for some years or for life.

I am proud of my African American roots. We have come along way as a community despite our past, and all of the chaos in the media. I can proudly say, I have never felt discriminated by the color of my skin. And if people have a misperception of me, it is quickly proven wrong.

How about you the Dutch East India Company
In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Dutch East India Company (VOC) was the world’s largest trade and shipping company. With a fleet of over a hundred ships, thousands of employees and almost thirty offices in Asia and six branches in the Republic, each with their own offices, warehouses and shipyards.

How did they capture them in the first place?

The ability of us humans to compartmentalize our behaviors is a blessing and a curse. Such mental flexibility may allow for survival, but also leads to the dichotomous existence of contradictory behaviors.

My family is from eastern nc close to the border of va and it’s believed, although hard to verify, that our ancestors were early slaves and have stayed/were enslaved in that region since the 17th century. It’s humbling when I visit to the family home and think about the hundreds of years of enslavement that my ancestors had to live through just for me to be born. Also, due to the prolonged period of enslavement and mingling between blacks and whites my family is heavily mixed race, including myself, which I just find very fascinating.

Me thinks the descendants of these poor souls are doing better than their African captors/enslavers!

He bought THEM not their “debt”. So enslaved and bred. Not “indentured.”

Yup, blacks came here the same time whites came here. But one of them were enslaved & the others were cry babies who ran away from home 😬

The only way we can correct this injustice is to help African Americans return to Africa.

All lies.... They were not Africans, but West Indian people. They were not the first black people there either.
