Could you imagine buying a ssd from ebay just for it to be preloaded with malware where your PC is infected and you don't even know it.

Ssd lifespan varies widely. The most important thing is writes. They degrade the most. Reads not so much.
Then its capacity. The higher the capacity the less of a cycle you use writing to it. Modern ssds spread the load across the nand in an efficient way so that the cells get roughly the same degradation.
And then there is the brand. A cheap ssd will likely break sooner. Got a 10 year old samsung rn while a cheap adata ssd broke after 4 years.
Heat is also an interesting topic. Its mostly an issue for the controller while the actual nand is quite happy and prefers higher temperatures.

When buying any hard drive second hand, always ask for the SMART readout. That will tell you a lot about the drive.

I always use my old ssds and hdds as bulk storage if I can fit them in my case

I bought a second-hand Samsung 990 Pro 1TB. I had an adapter, and the guy let me test it out in CrystalDisk. It was 80 dollars, damn good deal

Most all of my NVMe drives were either open box or used. Even the highest use ones are no where close to end of life. Maybe 95% life left for example.

Zach if you had to start all over again, what are some tips that you would give to early content creators? Shorts/long form 🔥

There's a lot of tools that will give you a report on SSDs. Just have the seller give you the report before buying it

Bought a used rx 6700 xt over the weekend off Facebook marketplace. Was honestly surprised because it still had its original packaging and a local warranty from the retailer they bought it from. He said that he planned on making a build for his son but decided to go a different route so it had just been laying around unused. Payed 200 for it. Building my first pc today now that the rest of my parts have arrived and couldn’t be more excited. Don’t worry we did test the gpu before leaving with it. My budget was 300 for a gpu and I can’t go any higher than that without a bottleneck so now I have an extra 100 to spend on aesthetics. Either gonna buy a vertical bracket or some better fans for my Montech sky two.

If you're buying in person or a somewhat knowledgeable person, they usually will be able to show you your "CDI" info of the drive (crystal disk info)

It'll tell you the drive's health, gb written, read, etc

Very useful program to use

Storage is the one thing I always buy new. SSD and ESPECIALLY harddrives. PSUs I also try to buy new for stability and making sure I don’t have a faulty PSU that kills the rest of my system

There are actually numbers that indicate a lifespan, and they are usually in TBW (terabytes written) or PBW (petabytes written). My ssd has 1.6PBW so if I filled up its storage by two terabytes every month it would last around 60 years (will def upgrade at that point)

I sell a gaming pc on ebay or Facebook marketing or Craigslist or sometimes jawa, but when I do that I buy the pc parts mostly used except ram and SSDs. Just like you said that they degrade over time the used ram can also have a problem with stability and when we buy it used there's chance of that happening too.

Good comment from Zach on used SSDs.
Crystal Disk Info can help establish remaining SSD life for an eBay refund claim but is not usually a basis for refund approval, since an eBay product advertisement does not require disclosure of that information, and Seller could claim he does not check. Since used SSDs vary so widely in prior use history, this is not a good market.

Only from write cycles, read cycles take really small amount of . Also for system drive or backup, new SDD, games programs and other in used ssd
