OneNote in 2022 - It's finally happening!

It took much longer than we expected, but updates are starting to flow through for the OneNote desktop app on windows.

There are four key elements of OneNote desktop that are changing over the next couple of months. They include design changes to help you to focus on your content, new features that significantly enhance content capture - with not only keyboard but ink, voice, and camera. There are a few changes that help you to organise your notes and pages. And some great changes that improve the ability and the clarity of sharing notebooks with others.

Don't worry, if you're currently using OneNote for Windows 10, you don't need to do anything. It will still be around until October 2025. But if you don't switch before then, you'll be missing out on some great new features!

As a student I have used OneNote for two and a half years. I was today’s years old when I discovered how to embed PowerPoints to my page of notes as well as record audio while note taking.

Needless to say this is a total
Game changer to have this all in a single app. Not to mention time saved.

I have been using OneNote since the very first version, so for some 18 years. Over the years I've amassed a huge pile of notes and meeting minutes in it, frequently searching for stuff years old. The return of the full desktop version is just one very good news! Love the consistency and simplicity of the UI with almost no unecessary changes done, no bells & whistles, pure utility.

As a student, a limitation with OneMote is that importation of large lecture PowerPoint presentations. Parts of the documents get lost. I hope this glitch is now addressed.

I'm really excited about the coming updates. except for two things.
( 1 ) I really wish there were a way to fix the width of a OneNote page while keeping it vertically infinite. It would help people like me so much who often must make pdfs or even physical prints.
( 2 ) apple notes still has the best ink to shape feature, especially wrt something very basic- straight lines- you just draw a roughly straight line and at the end just hold your apple pencil for half a second, and it becomes a perfectly straight line. straight lines are the most drawn shapes by me weather i am studying biology or chemistry or physics or mathematics, and there is still no efficient way to do it quickly. ruler is fine for occasional use, not when you are doing it a hundred times a day.

On a positive note, the feature i am most excited in the new updates is the new full page experience which i loved so much on the windows 10 version. And that the pencil is back, i can easily do shading in my diagrams. As panos pany would say, "Not just excited, #Pumped !! "

I want to keep the Windows 10 One Note Interface. Never been a fan of the horizontal tabs. I’m so glad they’re adding the option to the new one OneNote.

Thanks! I have high hopes for this update. I'm still not ready to fully switch to OneNote for taking notes with a pen since the experience on Samsung Notes is so much better in comparison. This could now change though. I hope the OneNote Android app will get a matching update.

My main issue is that the Android version doesn't have tons of the features available on desktop like ink to text/symbol which is very useful for graphs/sketches and also ink to math....

I really hope they improve printing. I’m a structural engineer and I love to print full size sheets of a drawing to a page within my project. I’d love to be able to print that inserted printout with my red marks to send to my drafters. I’d also love to put our engineering calc pages as a template into OneNote to have the ability to print an 8 1/2x 11 printout of calculations. But printing is an issue to make this useable in that fashion yet. I’m hoping to be able to have an entire engineering project in OneNote with markups and printing ability soon. It would be awesome to take everything digital.

Can someone in this lovely comment section give me some pointers on how to get this new simplified ribbon. I am using the "OneNote" version of Onenote and I dont get the "pen menue" when going inpen focus view.

This is amazing! I have been waiting for this, I work with Microsoft products and use it on all my devices (Apple and Microsoft devices) and have always found it difficult using one note as my main note taking app, even though its the best syncing to all devices. I pray that this update comes to ipad as it launches so I can finally move between my ipad, mac and pc seamlessly without getting frustrated with different features on each device.

Great video, well presented - thank you!.The feature that keeps me with OneNote for desktop over windows 10 is linking outlook tasks in OneNote to outlook. Otherwise I would have preferred OneNote for windows 10 - so I’m excited to hear about these updates, new features., and that the desktop a-p is getting some love!
