Beautiful! I wondered for two days where that extra sleeve/bushing came from. It was frozen to the shock bolt. Here is Chris with the answer. Now the shop is full of love again.

Thanks for your video. All I needed was some visual reference, and swapped out all four shocks of my wife's 73 beetle.

Legend once again. I knew what was left on the spindle shouldn't have been there at all but I could find very little info on the net. Then boom! A vid describing my exact problem. 20 mins later, one pipe wrench and a bit of Plus Gas and both sides are off and ready to take my new shocks/dampers. My front beam is almost ready to bolt back on. Cheers!

great videos! thanks for all your time and help, i find my self watching these even know i do not need to.. i bet they use 19mm and 17mm so that you can do it all with ONE set of wrenches and not need to have two sets for everything

Thank you for this! I'm debating trying to do this myself on my '72 Ghia and it sounded pretty straightforward in the manual but it's good to see here the little things that can go wrong and how to handle them. Also, Diesel is a sweetie, so nice to have him in the video!

yeah you can do it on the floor in your garage, but it is better on a lift. You just need a good set of jack stands to hold the car up while you take it off. Take the gas tank out too, it will help a bit more.

Yeah I am here man!! A lowered bug, regardless will ride rough. You can get better shocks, but it will still ride a lil hard.

@brighteyefilms ah, yes, you do have to wait for the penetrating oil to work. I'm a big fan of grease though for unpainted surfaces if not just to keep them from binding up the next time around....which brings us back to the torch :)

@MrBajaboy5b judging by the way they drool I would say hes water cooled, but he does resemble a vw bus

19 and 17mm ... Maybe vw engineers were thinking about the home mechanic with only one set of spanners.

Chris, I noticed on the removal of the stuck bushing you didn't even try using some penetrating oil. Granted you have easy access to a torch but your dad also didnt bother putting on grease on the install.

Hello Chris i have a question, i bought a new set of rear gas shocks for my bug but they seem a little bigger than the old oil filled ones i had (about 3.5cm of difference) can that cause any problems like they will make my car noticeably higher or it is ok to use them?
