Lubuntu 18 10 - Installation, Overview and new changes

1. Lubuntu 18.10 is first release with LXQt as the main desktop environment.
2. LXDE desktop environment or tools in the Ubuntu archive are no longer supportted
3. Switched to Calamares system installer from Ubiquity

Issues with workarounds

Upgrading Lubuntu from 18.04 to 18.10 causes a fair amount of issues. This upgrade path is not officially supported at this time.

However Lubuntu team prepared a page in the Lubuntu Manual which can help address the problems that arise after the upgrade

5. Use the ubuntu-drivers command line tool for installing addional drivers as it is not migrated to qt.

Issues with fixes

The default LibreOffice theme that ships on the ISOs is the default Adwaita theme, which is not consistent with the system theme. This will be fixed in version 1:6.1.2-0ubuntu2.

Trojitá has display issues with some emails related to a QtWebkit issue. This will be fixed in version 5.212.0~alpha2-12ubuntu2.

Both of the above fixes should come as updates within the next week.

Known issues

Trojitá will crash if sorted and resorted several times in succession (LP: #1797665).

QTerminal dropdown shortcut key does not consistently toggle visibility (LP: #1795998).

The only non-Ubiquity issue that affects all Ubuntu flavors (and main Ubuntu) is that DNS stops working after disconnecting from a VPN due to systemd-resolved (LP: #1797415).

Looks awesome! However, I still need icon based taskbar and the system icons theming is horrible, plus there is no real management of tray icons for various programs (I cannot hide them). So the panel still needs some love. Start menu is already in a good state, kudos to LXQt team.

Not quite sure what was wrong with LXDE as it worked for me. I don't think you can increase the icons on the start menu anymore (they are too small). Little things in the ui can make or break it for a user experience. It looks like I have tweak again to make it work to my liking but this time I won't be satisfied. unfortunately. It's a shame, it was good while it lasted..
