The Founding Fathers knew they were making history and so did the patriots who fought in the revolutionary war. Thomas Paine wrote in Common Sense published in 1776, “We have the power to begin the world anew.” That doesn’t sound like someone who thinks the world wasn’t watching or that future generations wouldn’t understand the importance of that year. Quite the opposite, they knew clearly that there works would be read by future generations and that their system of government would transcend for centuries to come.

There was debate among the founding fathers if the rights of the declaration included slaves, thus would have done away with it. They knew at that time if they did this the South would never join in the union, so they put this off until later. Less than 100 years later America did what no other nation ever did, they went to war with themselves to end slavery.

Great synopsis of the struggle. One thing however, disrupted the accuracy. The video is interlaced with clips of Civil War re-enactors. Why? There should be plenty of stock recordings of Revolutionary War era re-creations available, i.e. Williamsburg or Yorktown visitor centers.

The event that triggered the Revolutionary War, was when General Gage ordered the elite troops in Boston, the Grenadier and Light Infantry Companies along with some Royal Marines, to march to Concord to seize the gunpowder, bullets and a small 3 pounder cannon stored there in common. Every militia man has a small amount of personal gunpowder in hand, but the main stores were kept in Concord. As there was no domestic gunpowder production in the Colonies, it was all imported, Gage knew that seizing the main store would reduce the 'minute men' to about 24 shots each. So out they marched overnight arriving at first Lexington and later Concord on April 19th 1775. After a small exchange of fire on Lexington Green, the "shot heard round the world, " they continued to Concord where they found the colonials had moved most of the stores away. Once at the town more and more militia began to arrive and the Brits began a retreat to Boston under increasing pressure from the militia. The retreat by Col Smith degraded to a near rout, and the column was likely only saved by a relief force that marched out and met them on the road.

Interestingly, the Brits tried the same seizure with more success at Williamsburg in Virginia on April 21, 1775; a near simultaneous, coordinated action in 18th Century terms. In VA the Brits took the powder and locks off the stored muskets out to a Royal Naval vessel in the James River. The VA militia was called forth, and although there was no shooting event like at Concord, the British Governor, Lord Dunsmore fled the colony, effectively ending British rule in Virginia.

The goal of BOTH incidents was to seize the colonies gunpowder, effectively disarming the militia. Thus the shooting war of the Revolution literally began with a British attempt at.... Gun Control. Unfortunately most histories of the incidents, to include this one, often ignores the significance of the gunpowder seizure. And in fact, one of the biggest contributions of the French before their overt entry to the American Revolution was the smuggling of gunpowder through Spain to the Americans surreptitiously via the clandestine firm of Hortalez & Co. The wisdom of Gages plan was proven at Bunker (Breeds) Hill the following June when the militia resisted two assaults' on their emplacements, inflicting 33% to 50% casualties [sources vary] on the British troops, until they ran out of gunpowder and the British took the hill via the bayonet on the third assault.

Would be nice if someone would mention the Spanish battles with the British in Florida during the revolution, and the French, Spanish, and the Dutch battles in Britain during the Revolution, and the reason why the British left America. They where needed to protect the home front

Well, let me clarify few things.
There is an article from The Massachusetts Society Sons of the American Revolution (SAR ) called ‘Spain and the Independence of The United States.’ After reading the article cannot be a surprise to know than Spanish Commander Bernardo de Galvez has the same honour of be Honorary Citizeship of the United States like Laffayete…

Such a shame you have to add those sham "we know it's not perfect" type of messages at the end. These guys are the founding fathers and are above reproach and you certainly don't need to add things like to appease ungrateful Americans.

The battle of Lexington and Concord was April 19, 1775. Not the 18th.
Also no mention of the Proclamation of 1763 that forbid settlement west of the Appalachian mountains.
