Thanks for spreading awareness about the IGBT community

As an electrical engineer, this is a 5 or 7 level switching inverter(more level means more accurate sinusoidal output). The duty cycle of each IGBT is so low. That's why these igbt are smaller. More switching levels with a proper passive circuit(capacitors and inductors)will reduce THD ( total harmonic distortion), it means whenever output draws a sudden high current, it can almost keep its sin wave form. The output frequency depends on the switching speed. It can switch up to 50khz or even higher. Also the metal side of each igbt need to be attached to heatsink

Dont tell the lgbt community about this. No need for extra polarisation

The small ones have their heat sink tabs facing up off the board because they get attached to a big heat sink. Much of the size 2 module (the big one) is an integrated heat sink, but lots of small ones with one much bigger shared heat sink can help keep differences in temperature to a minimum. And potentially allows better cooling, depending on the heat sink design.

I work with those large IGBTs same schematic but made by Mitsubishi I use them for MRIs

A lot of small parallel IGBTs are fine. Zapi also uses them and Zapi inverters work for more than 30 years without problems.

The sunglasses are 100% on message. Well done.

I was wondering why all the capacitors were so huge, and what you'd use them for. But then I heard what that would be used for, and it made a lot more sense.

For anyone wondering. IGBT stands for "Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor." An IGBT is an extremely high power PNP BJT, with a small MOSFET that controls the current leaving the Base. They also have a small protection diode which protects the IGBT from surges.

It's really smart to use a bunch of smaller ones in parallel, both cheaper and offers a hige amount of redundancy. However, I could also see that manufacturing tolerances on the individual transistors would cause certain ones to work harder than the rest, even if theyre the same part number they will have minor performance differences.

They may also be less robust in the case of a malfunction, such as a voltage spike or failed part in the associated circuitry. It will also be a lot harder to manufacture orders of magnitude more solder joints, and diagnose issues if you just need to replace a few transistors.

Got to love it when those IGBTs blows... Sounds like a shot gun going off... Or at least the 480V ones in x-ray generators I'm used to.

Cool, interesting note smaller ones are used not just for size but to spread the power dissipation across the lot. Also probably higher efficiency

I had to switch a big coil on and reverse polarity with an H bridge circuit. The spike was so high it blow up the circuit very quickly even with the big IGBT. After several attempts found out to capture the spike I had to use a high fared capacitor and a pico capacitor at the same time. The othere thing I did is isolate the gate voltage(1:1 tranformer) so I can use NPN transistor on all 4 transistors. I was running the circuit on .10$ transistor with no problem.

He says absolutely nothing about whether the ones the Tesla uses are suitable for purpose, and how long they are expected to last. And the weight of 28 of those big buggers would certainly put a crimp in the performance, and use up a whole lot of space, if that's what he is suggesting.
