SSTC pt. 2 - BJT vs MOSFET vs IGBT

Today, let's choose what type of transistors to use for a Solid State Tesla Coil. I explain the differences between the most common power transistor types. I quickly ruled out BJT (bipolar junction NPN) transistors. Then I have to decide between MOSFETs and IGBTs. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. MOSFETs are generally better for smaller Tesla coils, IGBTs for bigger ones.

Best transistor explanation I’ve herd for a while.
Keeping us in suspense for the High voltages…

You are the man. You explain so good. I hope you go in depth with this SSTC so i can build it at home. Im learning so much from your videos.

Thanks for the EXCELLENT explanation. I used to deal with electronics many years ago (I still do but as a hobby) but more digital than analog and your series have been awesome to brush up my knowledge.

Really good stuff. I really learn practical application stuff from your videos of this type.

Best wishes from Australia. Thanks for the intro to these devices. My electronics education started with valve technology and progressed through to transistors UJTs JFETs Triacs etc. LEDs were red or green with blue and white ones impossible to be made. Standing joke of the period was referring to valves as n channel hotwire JFETs. I got diverted from Electronics and now i have retired it is great to watch your channel. Thank you and stay safe.

Was hoping you'd select an IGBT. Had to replace one once on an induction cooker, i had an idea on how they work but never understood why you would want a combination of a MosFET and a BJT, when mosfets are basically supperior in every way. But you learn something new every day, Thanks

IGBT - the bipolar transistor identifying as a FET.

Hi DiodeGoneWild,
can you please make a video about snubber networks or general switching side protection? I know that you have some info in Czech on your website but some info gets lost in translation and you don't go into calculation. anyway, thanks for the good videos recently

IGBTs are faster than one may think.. I use IGBTs in my DRSSTC running at almost 300kHz! And without any problems. The beauty of IGBTs is that if you provide high enough base current, you can make them switch really fast. Also in DRSSTC setup, they switch at zero current crossing, which also helps a lot. Datasheet switching frequency is usually given when hard-switching.. In ZCS inverters, they can switch way faster! I wouldn't be afraid to use IGBTs up to 500kHz.

It would be interesting if you also made a video about Gallium Nitride (GaN) and Sillicium Carbid (SiC) transistors. There is now a lot of development and research in those areas. The GaNs have basically a lot of similarities with MOSFETs, but are a lot smaller and faster, which also comes with some disadvantages. They are also passing current laterally via an 2D electron gas unlike MOSFETs. It would be nice to see your opinion on them. Keep up the good work!

How about the special JFET/Bipolar darlington or JFET thyristors ?

They are special voltage controlled high-speed thyristors that are shock-resistant and quite sturdy.

Edit:
There are also IGCT (integrated gate-commutated thyristor) and MCT (MOS-controlled thyristor).

This one is starting to be interesting. I am learning a lot from you. Thank you.

From my experience IGBTs are much more difficult to drive than Mosfets and they also heat up much much more. The only advantage it seems is that they are more ruggedized against ringing and overvoltage failures. Make sure to drive IGBT's gates to 18v and negative 5v for optimal result

I think that we should not discriminate the lgbt transistors. I am glad danyk respects the homosexual semiconductors.

This is a great high-power-transistor technology walkthrough.
I dont care about tesla coils so much, but this is very nice.
