Electric Surfboard That Flies Above The Water

This is an electric Hydrofoil surfboard or eFoil for short, which can fly above any body of water, at speeds up to 25 mph.

So how does it work work, well the hydrofoil surfboard has a wing-like structure underwater, and when travelling at speed, lifts the surfboard above water. This will essentially eliminate the drag caused by the board, having to “cut” through the waters surface and any small choppy waves that may be present.

The eFoil uses an advanced lithium-ion battery, to power a silent electric motor which is mounted on an carbon fiber hydrofoil, all controlled with a wireless Bluetooth hand controller, and riders can fly for up to an hour at speeds of up to 25 mph or about 40 kph, or if you prefer boat terminology about 21 knots.

The Hydrofoil Surfboard can be used by a wide range of people, everyone from total beginners looking for fun, to top athletes seeking a thrill, but the company does recommends ages 16 and up, who weight less than 250 pounds or about 113 kgs.

But with the eFoil, you simply go to your favourite body of water, such as a Beach, lake or river, park the car and walk the board down to the water and assemble it.

But this convenience does come with a hefty price tag of $12,000.

Fun Fact: I was diving in a marine preserve in Hawaii when one of these came into the area. The sound of the electric motor nearly burst my ear drum. Sure they're quiet on the surface, but these things are a major noise nuisance underwater - Like a robot alien is yelling in your ear. I can only imagine what it's like for the reef, dolphins, whales, etc. They look like fun, but need a lot more work before these things are ready for marine areas.

Excellent video, thanks. This is the start of a major step change I think.
- As soon as I saw foil boats, I wondered if they'd revolutionize all sea and river travel - eliminating most of the drag of the water.
- Tourist boats, tourist recreational fun craft, fishing boats, military boats where speed is a competitive advantage.
- Covered-in it will be 'boat cars' and 'boat trucks' joyfully ignoring the traffic clogging of ferries and bridges across the Cook Strait, Auckland/Sydney Harbour, Golden Gate Bridge even in rough weather.
- I wonder if even the huge oil tankers and ocean liners will evolve soon to this, saving fuel, speeding trips, reducing accidents.
- 'Seems so obvious once you see it. 'Comparatively so dumb to plough the whole boat body through water. About the same as the invention of the wheel.

This is the closest to the "back to the future" hoverboard that we are going to get in our lifetime. The mistake futurists made with that and flying cars in the past is not considering the energy requirements and the laws of physics when dreaming up concepts. Even star trek tech may be impossible or at least not possible until we become a type 2 civilization -which may take a lot longer than 2 centuries.
